Somebody's gonna have to tie my feet to the ground!

OK...new site....started out on the back 40 by the barn. Got tired of hauling the shovel around and digging great big holes only to find car tags and such had been distributed around, about two feet under. So I headed for the front yard of the house. Was getting late, and I knew the ballgame was coming on at 6:30, so I was trying to hurry around and see what I was in for there. After about 15 minutes I was huntin under one of the old apple trees and dug this BUTTONNNNNN! I was rolling around on the ground like that little baby jenny! My newest favorite find. I thought...I just gotta stay a few more minutes! Dug all kinds of stuff...some stuff I don't even know what it is. Got a wheat and a little tin...kinda like the ones that the Bayer asprin come in. I haven't opened it yet. Somebody PLEASE tell me what the button is for sure. I don't have a clue as to how to clean it properly either. I just ran some water over it and brushed it lightly with a toothbrush. After yesterday's fiasco with that button, I figured I better leave well enough alone. What a day...Nana's so happy.

Sure looks similiar toa a post Civil War button to me. What they call an Indian wars button. If there is a backmark.. that should tell us.

Also.. a Water Soak is the just about the worst thing you can do for a button. The water will get inside the button and eat it away. never soak in water. Use a dry toothbrush or toothpick and gently work the debris away.

OK...here's a pic of the back and I painted some of the differences that I saw with some of the other button's I have been looking through. The link that DornCo put is very close, but there is no little bob thingy behind the head of the bird on that one and the wings are straight....but the shape of the legs is closer! And I am in North Central Alabama. Thanks everybody for all the help!!!

OH...and Monty...I just knew you would love the shotgun shell.

Hmmm..it looks like possibly it was a two piece and the back and shank is missing unless it's underneath all the dirt. I'd definitely take my time removing the debris.

Hey Nana......Still working on this find , and its great ........you don't come across many like this type that gives you a little work ..!!! The feather on the head is relivant to early eagles buttons along with the straight wing span ...Plus those (Chicken legs) stretched holding the Olive vine in one Talon and I would say the 13 arrows in a bunch in the other are common with most buttons. The back missing is telling us two piece ....but there were ,what I call blown buttons going back to the French and Indian war up to the Revolution.........! HH

Hey Nana.........That is one great find and I think it is older than a union Civil war Eagle buttons that we have seen. The Eagle looks like some of the early buttons in the 1800's .......I will look it up for you shorlty here in some of the books I have....Congrats on an Excellent find!!! I hope its a rare one! Great Pics also.

I agree, I know very little about these things but I was guessing more like Revolutionary War era.

Again, just a wild guess from the examples and descriptions I've seen on ebay.

I sent the photos to Bob Edmondson, a leading specialist in U.S. military buttons. He confirms that it is a U.S. Army general service "eagle" button (1854-1902), and further identifies it as a tin-back variety from the Indian Wars period, c. 1875 or later.

Well...I really hate to ask this, but do you think Mr Edmondson could provide a picture of the one he is comparing this to...or a pic of one. I have now searched tons of websites and spent two hours in the bookstore pouring over Indian War buttons and am not convinced that this is one yet. I still feel it is older,due to some of the details on Nanas button. Most prominantly the head feather ,which I cannot find on the Indian War Buttons ,nor field service buttons.
Now I could be dead wrong on this,but I still need to hear that duck quack....Thanks

Wow! I'm not sure what to say here! Other than thanks so much ya'll for all the time spent researching this button! I told Seeker that I didn't get much sleep last night for researching that darn thing! I hope to be able to get back out there sometime tomorrow.

Romeo.....two days ago I found a really old button, but upon rinsing and carefully toothbrushing, it started falling to pieces. Will never know what that one was.
