Took the T2 out for a spin today. Did a little looking on google earth and spotted some old road beds and what looked to be an old house. Did some walking back into the swamp and found what I was looking for. Third hit was the matron head. She looked good when she came out, but didn't clean up as well as I hoped. About a foot a way I hit a steady 79. I was thinking indian head. At about 8" down I pulled out the ring. At first I was thinking copper, but when I got the inside wiped off I knew it was gold. This is my first gold find ever. It is stamped 18K, but I think it either had a copper band or was part counterfeit as it still has some copper patina on parts of it. It was about the same depth as the large cent. Also ended up with a toasted 1906 IH and a 1978 IH and toasted copper from another site along with some "whats its".

Re: Some old gold

Looks like a good hunt with a little gold thrown in not all bad, Congrats :headbang:

Re: Some old gold

evidently a long time ago a lot of people were scammed by heavily plated rings marked as 18k. I've sure seen a bunch of them posted

Edit: I placed this musket escutcheon plate on the what's it forum and they figured it out pretty quick. I wanted to repost on here now that I cleaned it a bit so more would see it. The markings are far as I can tell are S with 03 underneath them.

Nice find on the ring. Looks old. Congrats :headbang:

Great finds! The ring is most certainly plated, even though it is marked. Gold plated brass bands are fairly common finds, but what is uncommon is for them to have a lot of gilding remaining.
