Hello,
I found this a couple of weeks ago in an area I search, the town dates to 1870ish. There is an old pump house dating to about 1870 and very close by is an abounded houses built about 1900-lived in until 2005ish. It was found between the two. I had found a 1898 Barber Quarter within a few feet.
It appears to be some sort of lid, 2 1/2 to 3 inches across, at the handle part in the center no more than 1/2 inch high. It is metal with some sort of thin covering over it. The metal that forms the "handle" show through this covering. The "covering" is very imperfect or uneven around the hadle part, and has chipped around the base with slight pressure, If I had to guess I would say the covering was some sort of porcelin or ceramic.
Any Ideas?

Well, it's the same size and style as contemporaneous lids made out of stoneware. Two of the examples I have found in cornfields are a little bigger (4" in diameter), but I have one that is 2 1/4 inches in diameter and the knob on top is 1/2" high and 7/8" in diameter.

Regards,
