I was looking at google earth the other day looking for potential hot spots. When I noticed something strange. I don't know if this is something wrong with the photo or something in the water. Any ideas???

Looks like a bunch of leaches waiting for you.

I go for swimming holes that look like they have or have had beaches and other rec areas in the past. Not sure what you see wrong with the photo.

The dark square thing in the water.

You weren't suppose to see that. Go hide in the foot hills and keep your eye to the sky, so they can't find you when they come. They need to keep the entrance a secret! Good luck stay safe and keep us posted when you see them.

jump in there and see what that is

I wish you luck:icon_thumright:

Well,
The light seems to be coming from the bottom of the picture and all around "the pond" there are some very dark shadows cast by the trees. However, I do not see any shadows coming from the trees in the area of the blocky dark spot especially as the dark spot is rather rectangular and the tree shadows are conical, the dark spot being in the lower edges of the pond (otp) at about the center of the photo. Secondly to the right of the dark blocky spot there is a straight line on the bottom otp that goes from a small grove of trees in the upper portion otp across to the trees at what looks like a small point extending into the pond at the bottom of the picture. It is quite a straight line!

Any pipe lines in the area? Do you know if the pond nearly dries up at some points during the year allowing for an animal trail? What types of aquatic animals are in the area? Interesting puzzle, take a friend with you should you go to investigate!...............63bkpkr

This area is backwaters of the Tennessee river. It stays swampy. To the south of the mystery dark spot is a hill that I've hunted a couple of times. I have never walked down close to the water. Before you could ever get to the water you would have to wade through swamp and mud. I may try it this summer if the water level goes down.

My first thought... an underwater sinkhole. Careful, sinkholes popping up all over these days

Now there is a new thought, I was thinking something in the water but what if it is a nothing in the water! More to be careful about.

Swamps in Tennessee would that be equal to lots of snakes??...........63bkpkr

Just throwing this out there... Might be the roof of a duck blind

if you were to use Google Earth... you should be able to use the history feature and look at that spot over the last decade or so and see it over time..... might help determine what it is.

It looks like a cellar hole to me. The discoloration would be caused by the deeper depth. Try NETR Online • Historic Aerials and see if you can find an early overhead view of the site or one of the early topo maps.

smokedaddy,
I like your thought and I like your Avatar picture. Duck Blind Roof could be someone was out "Duelin" with it............63bkpkr

I've tried to look at the spot on older maps but can't zoom in enough. The older photos aren't as clear.

I'll bet you can spend all day finding anomalies on google earth maps, but unless you can investigate its just that.

There is a story about a wagon load of CSA gold that was lost in the swamps of N. Alabama/ N. Mississippi. I sure hope you have found it! The long straight line might be a rope tied to the wagon so they could find it later. I am trying to rebuild the CSA and am serving in the position of Sec. Of the Treasury. Please send the gold to me to be deposited, and you can keep the wagon and the rope. Good Luck with the recovery!!

Bahaha... Ok when I find the mother lode I will be sure to send it your way.
I've heard about the lost gold story. But I don't think this is it. When they built Pick Wick dam back in the 1930s, it created a lot of backwaters and this is a result of that. I think it's a roof of a house or barn that got flooded. I've used the ruler on google earth to measure the size and I would guess it is around 30' by 20'. I've used the ruler to measure football fields, and it's pretty accurate . But anyway I have no idea how deep the water is, but I am going to put on the chest waders this summer and venture out there to try and find out.

jukams,
Chest waders will keep the leaches off of you, do be sure to keep the water out of them as it is not fun to have waders fill up as the weight of the water is not fun to work against especially in sticky mud, may I also suggest a life jacket. The ruler trick is cool and it is interesting to understand the size of the anomaly. Wade on...........63bkpkr
