One can only imagine how these three cannons came to rest in a spot by themselves.

Other than crack head mentality I can't imagine why anyone would consider melting down a piece of history.

Wouldn't that have ended up being a "castles in the sand" kind of thing? I was under the impression that cannons disintegrated very quickly if they are removed from the water after being submerged for that long, and actually required years of meticulous preservation before they could join the garden gnomes in the back yard.

You are confusing cast-iron pieces with bronze guns. Quite different conservation requirements.
