Got up early this am and had my boots on the ground by 5:30am. Was back at my virgin site, sure was foggy, misty & humid. This time I came prepared with Coleman bug spray (40% DEET). That kept the bugs at bay.

Got more buttons & relics, then got a nice hit about 5" down, rang up as a 66.

Was figuring a headstamp or some lead. As I pulled it out of the hole I thought it was just some melted lead UNTIL I wiped it and saw the cross!

I'm in utter shock. Never in a million years would I have expected to dig one of these..... The rest of a hunt was a blur and I tried to stay focused but it was useless. I kept looking at this and wondering how it got here, when was it dropped & by who.

Any help on iding this is GREATLY appreciated. I'm thinking it's a 1691 1/2 reale but not sure.

I'll post more cleaned up pic's later.

Awesome find. What is the history of the site? You never know what you will find, that is what makes it so exciting. Any idea what the last pictured item is that you posted with the saw teeth and holes in it? I dug one a few weeks ago at an early 1800's site.

That's the funny thing. It's a cellar hole (just a dirt square impression) out in the woods. No stone walls around. Just along what appears to be a road winding thru the woods & hills. It's not on the 1867 maps, so it was lost to time a LONG time ago. I've only pulled colonial coins & buttons out of here as well as 1 button with a back mark, so perhaps it was lost in the early 1800's.

The jagged thing I'm told is a whizzer. A toy where a string was put thru the holes & it was pulled back in forth to make a sound. I was thinking something like a hat emblem/decoration or perhaps part of a cockade.

Nice cob as well as your other finds. I found my first (and only) cob about 20 years ago. I also thought it was a melted piece of lead until I wiped the dirt off and saw the cross.

That's definitely a keeper and a nice one at that. I remember digging my first cob like it was yesterday and it's been over 13 years. You'll never forget that day.
