Hello All,

We kept working the new site, which has very little pottery, but all the right age for late 1700s and very early 1800s. Seems we have stumbled on a petite habitants homestead and outbuilding group. The button patch we got into today had a lot of silver gilded buttons, which I love finding since they are almost without a doubt late 1700s. Nothing with a maker's mark on the back, so again that speaks to age. Lead bits, a musket butt plate, a "mickey mouse" style small padlock, and lead fishing sinkers made out of musketballs. Got one tombac button, which we don't see very often. The only ones of these we had previously dug were on our tavern and at another small farm site we dug this past year (where we dug only buttons and no coins). I also dug a pistol bullet that I am fairly certain is some sort of Colt variant. If someone could confirm, I'd appreciate it.

I managed to get Spanish #19 for the year, which puts us one step away from our goal of 20. I think we have a chance at digging 25 this year if the harvest and plowing cycle is good to us.

I did NOT post a photo of the wardrobe malfunction. For that you'll have to check the video. Goodness, seems like this is happening very frequently. Second set of ripped pants this year! :BangHead: Must be the UV, temps, mud, and frequent washes down here.

At any rate, here are the photos and video. The half real is in great shape and was laying right on top where it washed out from the rain. 1773 half real.

Those are some tough numbers bud!!!Its been almost two years since I have dug any Spanish silver.......I am on a drouth!

BB, I'm sure Shane had an extra pair of pants due to some of his past advebntures there-LOL. Congrats on #19 and a nice one to boot. Lock sure looks mid 1800s and the pistol bullet looks like a .44 Colt pattern. WTG my friend and HH in the button patch, Q.

Man, you are racking up on the spanish down there. I think you've under estimated your total for the year. 8-)

What kind of repellant are you using? I have never had a skeeter bite thru a glove. Deet has always worked for me, (Works on chiggers too). Maybe rub down with diesel fuel. :icon_pale:

When I saw the part about the ripped pants in the title I was thinking about all that rich cajun food you've been eating these last few years. :laughing7: Glad you cleared that up in the video.

Keep posting my friend. I'm having a blast watching your posts.

Randy

PS - Don't forget to give us an update on that Planters Bank counter stamp.

Hahaha, well I HAVE gained some serious weight after moving here. :D I use Deet, and it works for most of the skeeters, but some just don't seem to care. Like that one. Ughhh.

GREAT to hear from you my friend!

Cheers,

Buck

19th Spanish Silver ! wow thats awesome ... I hope I get just 1 in my life time lol .. good video awesome silver save ....sub like .....whats the best place to look for them . you seem to know were they are lo

Up in Mass, you should have no trouble at all finding one. In terms of the best place to look...I can't give away all my secrets LOL. I'd like to hope to dig spanish silver for years to come.

Fantastic find on the silver there BB, looks to be in good shape too.

By the way what would be your yearly record on Spanish silver?

ZDD

Last year, the team record was 19, with me recovering around half of those (9), which was a record for me. Shane actually dug one more than me last year as he got 10. This year of the 19 I have recovered 13 or 14--so really more than my share, statistically. So that blows away the last record. Back when I was hunting in VA I would dig a couple per year on average.

I had always heard that those "mickey mouse ears locks" were late colonial time frame. Great news on the colt variant bullet. Was really happy and surprised to find that. No, I didn't borrow pants this time. The rip took all day to work our like that, and the air felt kinda good in that heat. :D Also, too proud to wear the spare pants, which were--SWEAT PANTS. Maybe in cool weather, but NOT in 105 heat index! :D Plus, they look like crap. hehehe.

You almost dig spanish silver like others copper.... i was happy with my first after over 20 years of detecting! I hope you get 25 this year!

Nice hunt buddy! Those sliver plated flat buttons with no backmarks are a good sign of a 1790 - 1810 site. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around why you dig so much Spanish silver and hardly any US large cents or half cents.

You and me both. The score is currently 70 silvers and 4 coppers in 2 years. BUT, some of those silvers were later period, and of course we did find a few IH's and some wheats to match them. If we remove the barbers and newer, the seated and capped count was approaching the spanish total, around 14 seated to 19 spanish last year. This year 11 seated to 19 spanish so far. Clearly the Reales circulated for a long time, well after they were deemed to be "not legal tender" by the US gov't. I am convinced that there was a coin shortage in the area, judging from the fact that of those 25 seated coins only a couple didn't have "O" mintmarks. The fact that the Orleans mint opened so late, minted so few coins (compared to Philly), and closed during the civil war and during much of Reconstruction all make for a lack of supply in silver coinage in the area.
