We were having the worst day we'd ever had on this portion of the battlefield. At 3 PM, we'd been hunting 5 hours and I had one dropped Gardner and 3 percussion caps! Digging buddy had 3 or 4 bullets (But one was a Prichard) and a handful of caps. It looked like almost a bust. Then I got one of those "shadow" readings on the end of a trench. Just a mouse-whisper. At about a foot, the reading was strong and loud. Like a .69. At 18" it was screaming through my Grey Ghost headphones! Digging buddy joined me when he saw the size of the hole I was digging.

Then at about 2 feet, I caught a glimpse of a green rim as I dug.

Never touched it with my digger, and I'm glad because it is as close to perfect as you can get without BEING perfect. I've dug some nice stuff, and certainly more valuable, but this was my biggest relic hunting thrill EVER. Got it all on live video, too. I kept it short. Four minutes.

Not a rare buckle or anything, but my first (and I've hunted a lot of years) so I'm stoked. Early war, fat-letter W. H. Smith, Brooklyn marked, puppy paw buckle in immaculate shape. Deep burial in clean sand made it look like the ones they used to find in the 60s.

Wow nice find...In great shape...Even the hooks are in nice shape...not often to see them like this...Congrats..Thats a Banner in my eyes...

Wow. Super nice plate. I was expecting to be reached out as they usually are today. Yours has full lead and is maker marked to boot. Nicest US plate I have seen dug in years. Congrats.

Thanks to everybody for the kind words. Huge thrill for me, and so fortunate for the soil conditions that kept it so well preserved. MIKE: Hard to beat Grandpa Jones! DAVERS: When you find YOUR first, it'll be Confederate! Here's how to "re-patina" a grazed bullet - Lay it on the damage in your display case! WESTFRONT: Thanks. Isn't it amazing how good stuff can look in the absence of plows and fertilizers?? HOMEGUARDDAN: Are you Mudduck's relic hunting friend? He lives in Toano... DIGGERVET: Thanks and man you live smack dab in the middle of all the good stuff. don't you?? VOL1266 (Q) - Coming from you, that's a HUGE compliment. Thank you. OLD DUDE: Even a blind pig finds an acorn every once in a while! MR.B : Thanks. I drool a little too. MANGUM: Amen! I think about all the stuff we walk over every time we hunt, that's just BARELY out of our range!! JHUMBERT40 - Thank you. It's not banner quality for the stuff posted here, but it will always be remembered by ME as a "Banner day!"

Everybody else . . . again, thanks for all your comments. Heading back to that spot soon . . .
