i found these on two different archaic slate work shop sites over 20 miles apart, both sites produce wing banner preforms and busted wing sections these tools have spokeshaves ,perforaters and blade edges

Very cool Jeff. They are way to similar to be just a coincidence and probably were made for a specific reason or use.

So what would the task be? 1.Cutting, scraping something. Bone? 2. using the engraver to split bone like larson showed. 3 use the spokeshave to shape it? Maybe not bone, but some material that needed multiple tooling to make it useful? Interesting, thanks for showing them

i have no idea what task they used them for just thought it was cool that they both came off slate work shops,i have also found alot of thumb scrapers on both sites

I would say to work the slate,or to help make the tools to work the slate.imo

Thanks jeff and neogeo for answering my pesky questions So slate is a softer material, using flint to shape it is of course possible. Bare with me here, trying to avoid asking a question. If these tools were used to make the bannerstones and the busted wing sections, it stands to reason the tools you find might possibly be used to shape some of the bannerstones found in that area.

My assumations sound as bad as my questions, so I will not ask if anyone has tried making bannerstones with similar tools. And yes, I know what assuming means....

Are they uni-faced?If so I see no problem with them being used as a Slate shaver...I.E.Shaveing them in to a shape...Realy interesting....Thanx

frank they are bi-facial ,but each one has a biface knife edge and a beveled edge

For other newcomers like myself, here is an interesting article about a bannerstone workshop and the production of these slate artifacts. The article is an old one, and I'm sure new insight has been gained. but it was a good place for me to start getting an idea of how they were possibly made. Have you found "flint pecking hammers" at this site jeff a?

never have found a flint hammerstone,im in the glacial morraine area of ne ohio and we have so many glacial cobbles that they would just grab a rock that suited them then toss it afterwards,i dont think they used these tools directley on slate but used them to make other tools for the process
