Spit polish an old coin in the field?

I see so many do it on their videos where they spit on and rub the hell out of coins. Is that a bad idea or not?

I do it gently as long as it's not silver. If silver I'll barely brush it off and if I need more deets I'll wait till I get home. Then again most of my soil is clay or topsoil, not sand mixes that are even more abrasive.
Way I see it is most dug coins are already condition-compromised due to being in the ground. My gentle caress is a lot less than the grounds been doing to em since dropped.

Don't have a problem watching people spitting on coins, its licking them that gags me...

Just kidding...I use bottled water for a light washing.

spitting and licking aside, what is the best way to clean coins? and jewelry too?

Inasmuch as I primarily detect private property with a contract, I have the option of taking coins home to soak in bottled water until I can read a date. Sometimes I clean the particularly dirty coins with bottled water and baking soda in the field to find dates & mint marks. When there are just a few coins in a yard, I gently clean them there, but as with the current property I'm detecting, I'm already up to 170 coins, so I'm cleaning them at home just to read dates and mint marks, for a complete settlement with the property owner when I've finished the property.

You can bring a small bottle of water to drop them in or
carry a bottle of water to pour over them or spray them with.
