St. Patrick's Day dig at Shiloh

I am fortunate to have been given permission to detect some property that borders Shiloh National Military Park. The weather today was about as perfect as it could be; sunny :icon_sunny: 78 degrees, and a light breeze. I was told by the owner that this site has been actively hunted since the 60's, so I wasn't expecting to find very much. I was happy just to be able to swing my coil over such historic ground. The day turned out better than I could have ever hoped. I found an 1861 Seated Half Dollar with XF/AU details ;D, a model 1851 British Rifled Musket bullet (Tower), an Eagle I button, 8 .58cal 3-ringers (4 dropped, 3 fired, and 1 carved), 8 .69cal round-balls (4 dropped, 4 chewed), a powder flask lid, a big lead poker chip, a brass rivet, and a broken piece of a spur. Not bad for a 20 year old White's Eagle Spectrum on a "hunted out" site.

Congrats, and great digs with older MD! Way to hang in there, just proves no site is completely hunted out, but it is getting harder. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

I dont know how true it is,but I had a very knowledgeable gun collector point out what he called "Blood Rust",on a early firearm of mine.He stated that blood having very acidic qualities rusts very quickly....that being said,I know Silver doesnt rust, but the corrosion on your coin looks exactly like what I describe :dontknow:The opportunity was def.present at your site!!!!

The ground where I found this is very rocky and is also a cow pasture. I think the damage is probably from years of cows stepping on it in that rocky ground.

Ahhh, well cow's may explain it,but not from them stepping on it(that doesnt cause erosion.....but urine does!)stepping on it would scratch it

Nice finds from a historic site  This Tennessee soil the last couple days has been great. I have been pulling out bullets and stuff on some areas I thought I had cleaned out. You did well and your machine was smokin!!! 8)
