Here is my unusual find today from a depth of 7 to 8 inches. It is a stamped copper alloy or brass emblem of an eagle sitting on crossed cannons. The reverse bears applied eyelets to attach the emblem to clothing or hat.

I have attempted research since getting back from the hunt this afternoon but have not found a similar piece, although something like this has been used in the past as a cape fastener.

It does have a green patina, some of which came off in the process of cleaning with water and a tooth brush.

Thanks for any light you may shed on this little mystery piece.

P.S. Found in central Baltimore County, MD.

If that's fire under the bird (logs?), I would say "Phoenix" rather than "eagle". (?)

But the only real thing I know about birds is that they taste good with the right prep.
Yard birds, anyway. :)

Thanks Anduril. Does appear more as flames beneath the eagles, so the logs makes sense.

Thanks Gambrinus for the example. Does seem like we are working with a phoenix. From what I do not know.

Thanks nhbenz! You've helped me before on unknowns.

Glad to help! There are some differences between the two here, but hopefully someone here can determine if the application was the same.

Thanks nhbenz! I will mark this thread solved. The item you re-posted here appears much like mine; perhaps an eyelet and other fittings are missing from the one I dug. As an aside, I noticed a large red hawk nearby today, perched on the backstop of a nearby baseball diamond.

Those look a lot like cannons.

Tommy, thanks for your comment. I'll check out how you've been doing. Been going to this same field for July and now into August. My last two brief hunts there I didn't find much, but this afternoon I got in 3 hours and really had a good day.

Thx ATW! That was found this afternoon. There were five other relics found that I hope to post tomorrow: 1852 LC, 3 flat buttons, and a plain copper ring. Also had some signals coming at between 85 and 90 that turned out to be clad quarters (3).

I found one just like this near Vicksburg back in the '80s....It was identified as a Hessian Cape Pin.

Thanks much, Ripcon. That gives me another avenue to pursue!
