Standing Liberty quarter type 1 question

I have a type 1 standing liberty quarter. The problem with it is that the date is worn off. Does anyone know of a way I can somehow bring out the date tofind out if it's a 1916 or 1917?

look on the back -- 1917 "bared breast" type 1 no stars below eagle on back -- mint mark if present is on front lower left by date * --- 1917 type 2 has 3 stars on rear below eagle --and date is "Pedestal type"

Ivan, there is no question as to whether he has a Type 1. The original poster is asking how to distinguish between the dates of a type 1. Perhaps a known die crack or some other marker.

Without better pictures (close-ups), it will be difficult to say for sure. You might want to try scanning the coin. But from the picture above, it looks like a 1917 Type 1.

Sorry, posted to quickly. My guess is based on the gown marker near Liberty's feet. A 1916 T1, the gown appears attached to the ankle. A 1917 T1, the gown is distinct. Also, the rivets on the shield are distinct (partially). The rivets on a 1916 were not well struck all the way around. The 1917 has distinct rivets all the way around. Being well worn eliminates some of the markers, but almost surely the rivets would not be discernible if it was a 1916.

Mark 5, If you scroll down to Sept 18 posting here there are pretty fair pictures of my 1917 SLQ S type 1. and there are also real good pictures on eBay of both 17's and 16's. I can see why you'd like it to be the right 1916. There's one listed for over a grand in value. They sure are a pretty coin in any condition but like buffalo nickles they sure screwed up when they put a raised date on a high wear spot. Congrat's on a great find.

Thanks everyone for all the posts. I'm assuming this is a 1917 since they are more common but, I'm sure you know, I'm hoping it turns out to be a 1916.
