I Agree, the first thing I thought of was the big mystery counter, posted some time ago.

Is it totally flat, or somewhat convex?

flat and if you look close there are circular marks on it. Not sure what it is everyone thinks it is?

Sorry for hijacking your thread wstgo, I think we all agree with the first response you got though.

Sorry to have to say in disagreement, I seriously doubt it is a lamp wick-adjuster. The dime in the photo shows it is waaay to big for that purpose. A dime is "about" .71-inch wide. Anybody ever seen a 2.5-inches-wide wick-adjuster?

Also, wick-adjusters tend to have sharp-pointed teeth. A wick-adjuster handle's "disc" doesn't have teeth, but isn't 2.5-inches wide.

Another good possibility is a drag adjustment for an older fishing reel. I can't find any pictures but with the circular wear marks on the face, it might have been some type of tension adjuster. Either on a fishing reel or something else? :dontknow:

so let me see if i understand this...........

the cog is 4 X larger than a dime and it is a wick adjuster on an oil lamp?

i just can't wrap my head around that one.

my wag is a gear for a crank on an old chain style well pump.
