I go to pick up 3 boxes of dimes from a BoA and the teller asks me what I'm collecting. Obvious answer is "key dates". He then tells me he doesn't look at dimes but collects silver in the form of halves and quarters when he sees them.

Then he pulls out a nice stack of 40% halves. I ask to purchase and of course he says no dice. Makes me sick.

At least it's worth knowing not to ask for halves there because if a teller gives any to me, they will all be clad.

But it's good for picking up dimes.

Thought I would share my frustration.

so why exactly are you frustrated????

I shouldnt say this just for the principal, and also because it has been brought up and talked about several times recently...

At least now you have saved yourself some time in the future because you know not to (or at least you should) go to this bank asking for halves....

And if your post was implying that you offered to pay him face value for his 40% halves, than you are the one with a problem here... Would you sell me all your 40%'ers for f.v.? If I would have been in this situation, I would have had that teller who is obviously cool, and half way intelligent culling silver for me and selling it to me for lets say 10-30% under spot price, he wins, I win, everybody wins.... NOBODY is sick;)

Next week come in and bring him a nice $5,000 in halves saying, "I vaguely remember you saying something about you liking halves last week, so I decided to bring in my collection that I'm trying to get rid of." Also, don't forget to bring back the dimes saying you didn't find any "key dates" :hello2:

They weren't out in plain sight, I have no problem with this... I consider this him just showing you his finds.

Yep, for all you know they are part of a coin collection he brought in to show people. There is a huge difference between seeing silver in the tray that a teller won't let you buy and a teller showing you his stash.

However, relationships like this can easily work out to your advantage. There is a fellow collector, what does he like? What is he willing to part with? Etc. The key is to talk and see what the overlap is. For example, I don't particularly like wheat pennies, I mean, I save them out and will most likely sell them in the future, but really I'm not a collector of them. On the other hand, I do like silver and British/Foreign coins. So one teller I helped complete the majority of her cent album (obviously missing some things like the 1909 S VDB, 1914-D, etc.) by selling her any finds that she needed for a penny, in return she would save me any interesting coins and all the silver. Since I got the coins at face value via CRHing, it was no loss to me and I did (and still get) a good deal of silver from there, well worth the 50 cents of wheats that otherwise would have just sat in my junk box.

You can either look at this as an opportunity for $$$ to be made, or you can look at it as a loss. If you look at it as an opportunity, you might be surprised at what you can find.

Some good ideas in this thread--thanks!

All the best,

Lanny

I have no criticism of OP on this one. SilverJack was just relaying an experience had. There was no whining undertone, just matter of fact stating that he/she is frustrated that this bank cannot be a supply bank for halves and that he/she is now aware of a better positioned competitor in the hunt.

Nice post SilverJack. Keep using your senses, applying logic to the hobby, hunting at your own pace, and you'll do just fine.

I guess I never replied to this thread appropriately.

My point was the ones he pulled out to show me were from his tray. They were not owned by him but were property of the bank. In fact, I would question any bank's policy if they allowed their tellers to whip out their money, especially a coin collection they had brought in, when dealing with customers. In fact, most banks have policies in place that require them to sell the coins they want to another teller then purchase them with their money over the counter. Keeps things on the up and up.

So to be clear, my issue is with tellers that have bank money in their till and they won't exchange. And I have no issue with tellers culling for themselves, just get it done and don't do it after I've asked for the coin. That's just unprofessional.

If you can setup an arrangement like this with a handful of branches, it could work out pretty good in the end for you.

Best way to handle it. Plus, like someone else mentioned now you know not to waste any time on that branch.

Bottom line....banks are in business to help customers with financial needs.......not hire coin collectors.

Any SMART teller will pull the silvers they find. I sure would if I worked in a bank! Also, just because he has a stash doesnt mean he looks through all the rolls that come through the bank. I met a teller once who had a silver quarter in his tray. I tried to buy it from him and he said he was saving it. I asked for halves. They had about 15 rolls. I bought them and pulled 12 40%ers from them.

You never know.

Some banks here seasonally allow coin and PM buyers to come in, set up, and buy collections from customers and people off the street, believe it or not. The tellers also sell what they've found. I guess that's a financial need...

If I were a bank teller, I'd probably cull silver too. But I would never, ever tell customers I was doing it, let alone show them my stack while AT WORK.

So to me, the teller doesn't seem all that sharp. But then again, I like being sneaky about this hobby. ;)
