This is about 2 feet long. I came across it in early spring. It was near a large boulder in the woods, far from any trail. It had some small stones placed in a circle around it. At first I thought it was a large stick, stuck in the middle of the small stones, but I noticed it was made of stone.

Any idea of what it might be?

A makeshift tombstone?

Doesnt look like it was there for a long period of time, meaning probably less than 50 yrs. I dont think it is old.

Perhaps a grave marker for a pet?

I wouldnt think it would be a marker because there is a big boulder nearby unless its an old corner mark to a pc of property....lots of those in the woods, but yours seems to mark spot maybe something is buried there...( saying this because of the rocks in circle ) what are the surroundings of the location. Id probably have to dig there :icon_scratch:

There’s a stone wall from the 1850s about 20 yards to the west of it.
There’s a stream about 20 yards to the east of it.
The area is overgrown woods, now conservation land and the closest trail is 200 yards from it.
There’s a major Indian east/west route (now a state road) 200 yards to the North.

I meant to add:
I have a lot maps from this area and this spot does not correspond to any boundaries from the last 400 years.

Have you checked it with a MD yet?

There's no way that rock stayed standing upright a few inches in the ground for over 400 years. Maybe a guy took his wife hunting and she saw Bambi field butchered and made a grave for the carcass. Just kidding...kinda. or maybe the guy who made the wall.. buried the family pet there.

This might seem a little bit out there but I am seeing a classic KGC marker. Laugh if you want but post that in the Treasure Marks/Signs forum, you'll see what I mean. They will get mad at your for pulling it up but if you can reposition/recreate the original arrangement, photograph it and repost you'll receive some excellent feedback from those guys....they are amazing. I promise you, you have something there! It looks like a sun dial and/or directional marker.....classic KGC......

I don't know Gator, he says the rock is about two feet, half of which looks to have been in the ground....?

Many old burials here are just a single rock. Usually a child from child birth.
