stone bead

Found this in the sand along the tom bigbee river in Al. this week.
looks like some kind of bead.length 1/2 inch x1/2 inch.One end small hole,other end larger hole.
Any ideas. Could just be a rock thanks

it's a rock
this kind of rock sure seems to come in weird shapes
here is a similar type rock (I think it is the same kind)
it sure looks like a Buffalo effigy
but it's just a rock

I agree with larson. It is just a natural formation. Now that doesn't mean it couldn't have been utilized as a Bead, especially if it had been found on a village site, but finding it on a river bank means it's probably just natural.

There was a very large number of native amercians on the Tenn. river area, and there were French traders a long the rivers and streams here in bama for some time. This looks like a early type " trade bend " from the early settlements made by the natives for thousands of years, did be
discouraged, any thing is possible in these rivers,, keepa hunt'in

True on the Tennessee river. But most things I have found are reed drilled with sand. We also find those little natural bead fossils that are not drilled and think when found on sites they were used as a bead though they are not drilled. Soooo if you found it on a site may be a bead. They did a lot of little shell beads. I will try to click a pic of some when I have time from the Tennessee river. Thanks for sharing.
