It sure seems to me that you are on to something. This is way out of my league though. Did you happen to look behind the tree that is growing up out of the rock for an opening ?

Thanks for the encouragement stevesno, I didn't think to look at the tree, but thats a good idea, there could be a hole behind that rock. The trees around there seem to grow out of almost almost nothing, all it takes is a small crack in the rock, and a handful of dirt and a tree springs up. Heres another picture from a different angle of the same area.

Your photography is absolutely stunning.

My only idea is about the picture that you called a dead man - looks more like a turtle than most of the others, IMHO.

I would strongly suggest that you take your pictures to the nearest University and have their geology faculty review each picture with you to determine which of these formations are most likely man made and which are not. There will most likely be someone there familiar with local lore and signs similar to those you are seeing. If anyone can help you with this, they can.

Thank you deedeelou you are very kind, maybe photography is a hobby I could get interested in if this treasure hunting thing doesn't work out for me.

The suggestion about the University is a good one, and I may have to pursue it in the future, but I have a basic mistrust of how a University would handle information like this, maybe they would just laugh and throw me out, or maybe they would tell some person or agency that would decide that this site needs in depth long term study, and protection from people like me. And from what Ive read on the Internet [so it has to be true] most of the University types don't seem to believe in all this Spanish treasure stuff anyway, and consider those that do a bunch of wingnuts. So for now I have to keep plodding along by myself, and with a lot of help from my friends on TreasureNet, maybe someday Ill stumble into a mineshaft and the mystery will be solved.

Heres another picture of the deadman,if you have a way of marking it up so I can see the turtle you see it would help me a lot.

TLH:

I think you have the market cornered on "rock photography"... and, maybe, rock commentary :)

Starsplitter

Thanks starsplitter, I do have an awful lot of rock pictures, but its mostly out of necessity .The treasure hunting season is kinda short up here in the mountains and I cant go out searching every day so theres not many days I can spend at the site I'm showing you. So to solve this problem I take pictures of anything and everything that looks odd to me, and in the winter when its ten below and the snow is deep I can sit around the fire with my laptop and study all the pictures Ive taken last summer.

As for the commentary, I have tried to learn all I can about Spanish mines and how they hid them but it is a very difficult thing to learn from scratch. The people that know a lot don't seem to want to talk very much about what they know [and I don't blame them], and even worse, the experts don't even agree with each other on a lot of things because none of the information on this subject is written in stone [a little play on words there]. And to top it all off theres a vail of secrecy over the whole thing because no one wants anyone else to know exactly that their doing.[ and that even includes me.] ;)

TLH:

Just so you know... I was just ribbing you a bit. It seems pretty clear that you are on to something. Have fun while you go at it! I'll keep an eye on your progress. It is an interesting strand.

Starsplitter

I know you were starsplitter, so heres a picture just for you. This is a overall view of part of the area of the " treasure" site.

TLH:

The picture is great. Is the general concensus that the "treasure" is gold bullion, etc., or a mine? If it is the latter, perhaps a geologist might be of help (narrow things down). Just an idea.

Starsplitter

Thanks starsplitter. My understanding is that the Spanish would have one or more mines in an area, normally they were large and productive mines, [It was to expensive and dangerous for them to be risking there lives over small amounts of gold] so they would build a storage vault to hold the gold they recovered while they were mining, and to store gold in that they were unable to take back home when they left. [sometimes they found more gold than there mules could carry].

So if you find a Spanish mining site there are several possibilities of what may still be there. You may find nothing but empty holes, [we don't want that one] or you may find one or more mines that still have gold ore in them, [ thats real good] or you could find mines that still have ore in them and a storage vault that has some amount of gold in it waiting for the mine owner to return and retrieve it.[this is a mixed blessing ]

A geologist is a good idea, and sooner or later I may have to call on one [ my brother in law is a geologist ] but at the moment I already know there's gold in the area cause there was gold found there in the 1870s. The old timers found placer gold in some creeks in the area but could never find where the gold came from. My theory is, the Spanish found the gold in the creek, traced the float [float is gold that is washing down the hill away from its source ] and located the deposit. they would have taken the float, and mined and hid the source, leaving nothing but the small stuff in the creek that the old timers found. Thats my theory and I'm sticking to it. ;)

Kinda quite around here so I guess Ill post another picture. This picture is of a rock that looks like a bird to me, as usual this is in the same area as all the other pictures Ive posted. This is not a very good picture cause I wasn't taking a picture of the "bird" I was taking a picture of something else and I found this in the picture at a latter date, So I haven't been able to go see the rock in person yet ,and this is the only picture I have of it. From what Ive read the bird would mean that the trail turns. So does it look like a bird, and what would it really mean if it is?

Sorry it took me so long to respond but Ive been traveling and don't get on the Internet very often. Thanks woodpecker for your response, I see what your talking about, and found another picture from a different angle to see if its still there. What do you think?

Hi TLH ,

Yeap i think this is linked , as if you look on turtles back looks like outline of a head aswell ,if possible and safe to i would climb up and look in direction hes pointing or pointing at (could poss be peaked rock/hill as turtles tail pointed), in your 2nd picture looks as if there could be a loose rock on his arm , if there is check this rock for shape or markings on it , take pictures of it aswell , see if anythink hes pointing at is in shape of rock , also the face on turtle see if theres any strange looking rocks at end of shell , or markings on there that could match what hes pointing
also noticed if you zoom in his hand looks like a animal ,poss a wolfwhich again would be saying this direction ,and noticed on the rock face to left of looks if could markings ,

there could poss even be somethink nice here to be found, looks as if these rocks could be loose and been placed here ,and could be concealing a small cave,(heart,+mans chest , treasure chest) but this could be a death trap aswell so please be carefull,

atb , woodpecker

ivan salis , Thanks for your input, and mucho apologies for my late response. I had kinda written off the twisted tree based on reply #179 but any new insights you may have on a tree like that is appreciated. If the white tree your talking about is the one in the background, thats an aspen tree and there a very common tree in Colorado and they are all white. Heres a picture of a group of aspens in the fall.

I apologize again for not responding in such a long time,

Ive been traveling and haven't had an Internet connection

very often. But thats over now and I'm back home, the

snow has melted, and I'm ready to get out to the

"Treasure" site again.

I have a little Hallmark popup slide in camper that I take

out to the site to live in when I'm looking for "Treasure"

and Ive spent the last couple of days getting it ready for

the summer treasure hunting season, you guys and gals

have given me some good ideas of things to look for,so I'm

hopeing this will be the year something interesting will

turn up.

Thanks woodpecker for the Ideas and the cautions,

death traps are always on my mind, I'm often up high,

surrounded by large boulders, and usually alone.

I can see the face on the turtles side your talking about,

as soon as I can get out there Ill see if theres any chip

marks where the face was carved, and take some pictures

from different angles to see if its really there.

You know TLH, I don't know about treasure signs and such in your pictures - but, you sure are capturing some pretty scenery.

Thank you starsplitter, I don't know much about treasure signs either but I'm trying to gather as much information as I can, and I have a lot to learn . As for capturing scenery, I'm truly blessed, I live in a place that you can point a camera in any direction and see a calendar picture of Colorado.
