strange pile of rocks

Yep... it sucks. But, now you know what it is, or isn't. The news does not mean it is no go as a marker. I guess you can piece together the elements/markers of confidence and decide for yourself. Jesuits could have used something natural to serve their purposes. Then, maybe/probably not. A suggestion: see if it fits into a "context" of some sort - if it "works" in conjunction with other markers you are sure of. Best of luck - you do seem to be on to something.

thanks starsplitter, actually I'm not feeling all that bad about your report, In fact its kind of refreshing to have such a definitive answer on a possible sign. I wish every odd rock Ive found could have such a clear and concise answer that would rule it in or out,the way your friend the Dr. did. Please give him my thanks. So Ill scratch the tree off the list and keep posting pictures of rocks.I guess what I need is a rock Doc.

TLH:

Just a few thoughts... have you checked any of your "rocks" for tool marks? Or, have you compared the rock(s) with what lays at the base? For example, the "old man" marker - around the edges, is there anything that doesn't fit with a totally "natural" cleaving of the stone?

At the base, are there chunks of rock with unnatural markings? In other words, is there anything that is inconsistent with a totally natural process? I'd survey the sites with a metal detector too. Something may have been left behind.

Good luck.

Mark

Thanks for the ideas starsplitter. I have checked for tool marks, and in some places I believe there are some, but there up to high for me to be sure.I also wonder if small tool marks could be eroded over time and dissapear, local legend would put these " signs" about 300 years old. There are " unnatural " cracks in some rocks, but often this is a guess on my part. From what Ive read the Spanish were very adept at using what nature gave them, and didn't look at a large rock and try and turn it into an Indian, they would look for a rock that already had a basic Indian shape and enhance it. So a crack that forms a nose may be part natural and part man made, and with very little knowledge on the subject "thats me " and hundreds of years of erosion, a definitive answer can be elusive. Also, always keep in mind that these signs were not meant to be seen by you and I, If they had built signs that looked like Mount Rushmore everyone in the county would see a clearly man made face and go looking for answers. I haven't seen any piles of rock at the base of rock " signs " that would indicate they had been chipped from above,I have always felt that they would have removed them for the same reason they removed there mine tailings " dead give away ",keep in mind this was all done with slave labor. Ive done a little metal detecting, because they would bury there mining tools nearby, but in general iron was in short supply " they would recycle there horseshoes ",so they probably didn't leave much laying around. But thanks a lot starsplitter if you can think of any questions or answers, especially answers ;D, let me know.

Heres what looks like a pointer to me, but I cant tell what it would be pointing at. The whole thing is about seven feet tall, and the bullet shaped point is about three feet tall. The bullet point is a separate part that just sets on top of the long base that is carved from and still attached to the rock. Is it a pointer ? whats it pointing to ? any ideas ?

TLH:

Is it pointing up to a ledge or other outcropping? Should it be reversed, as in pointing down. Is it a direction, maybe directing you to climb up and over? Could it indicate something on the opposite side of the rock(s)? Just thoughts.

Starsplitter

Good thoughts starsplitter, Ive kinda thought it might point to the ledge above it, and maybe theres something written on top out of sight. Were it reversed it would point to the trail that runs beside the rock its on. I've tried to climb onto that ledge, its about 25 feet high and very narrow, and to get to the top one would need climbing skills of which I am not blessed. The Spanish being kinda sneaky,do you think that the pointer points to the rock in this picture, which may point somewhere else ?

New member and don't know a thing about symbols but I will offer a couple of observations from your photos. In your eye catcher pic in reply #142 just to the right of the marker and slightly below is what looks for all the world to me like a spanish/jesuit cross with possibly a teardrop or diamond shaped outline. Also in the climbing snake pic in reply #48 there appears to be a checkerboard glyph almost dead center in the pic above the left end of the rock shadow. Just to its left is a triangle pointing up. Right under the triangle is a possible red painted glyph. Probably nothing but I thought I would throw it in.

plainsman thanks for your input. Heres a couple of pictures of the same areas you mentioned, is there any way that you could mark the things that you see ? these pictures are from different angles and I would be interested if you can still see the marks you saw in the other pictures. I marked an area on the snake pic where I think you were talking about.

Always nice to hear from you bytheriver, you've single handedly"is that a word?" got me looking for weird trees everywhere I travel. I can see a heart shape where you marked, but cant tell if its man made or not,Ill have to take pictures from different angles this spring and check. The "Diamond" I believe is man made, its a carved out area thats part of a sign that I haven't posted pictures of yet. Heres another picture of the same area.

I hear ya....cant go anywhere without looking for signs & symbols. I even see hearts on highway overpasses and concrete curbs on the way to and from work. "I am a city dweller".

The heart is very abvious man made, the heart could be a wannabe, or has eroded over the last 2 centuries. My only rock knowledge comes from Treasure Net and not from actual in your face rocks!

I saw your rock formation in a Western movie recently. I recognized the phallic symbol. Cant remember the name of the movie; the scene was towards the end of the flick when the cowboys were on their way home from the range...in the background there was this large formation...I yelled out "I know that rock"....LOL

bytheriver when cowboys come home from the range everything looks like a phallic symbol. :D

I don't know if you're on to something, or your just imagining stuff. However, a couple of things are for sure:

a. You take some great pics
b. You really know how to use Photoshop

I am really enjoying this strand. Keep at it!
