What's new

Submitting coins for certification - Registered Mail isn't what it used to be.

The nearest show that the grading services, NGC or PCGS attend in in New York City and that is 5 hours away and the cost of a hotel in NYC is huge, I could fly to FUN and back for the cost of a night at a NY hotel, also I hate NYC and don't want to be mugged.

I attend local shows in MA and NH there is a big annual show in March, the Bay State Show but even the biggest show in New England doesn't attract the services to my experience.

I also hate NYC but have never hesitated to attend coin shows there when I was younger. The Times Square area was rougher then (70's and 80's) than now, but the shows were always in upscale places. I've been in far worse places and just hold one hand in a pocket like I'm carrying and don't walk like a tourist. At one time, I could take a bus from either DC or Baltimore to NYC for $20 roundtrip, far less than the cost of driving and parking.

I don't worry about losing the coins, it is more the cost. For me to drive the 5 hours to NYC and then stay in a hotel would run into the hundreds of dollars.

If I had a really rare coin then that would be the way to go but for common GSA CC dollars it is not worth it

I agree on both counts. But if you re-consider, BWI is about 60 miles from me & is an easy, convenient airport. If you find a cheap same-day round-trip flight to Baltimore - BWI from Logan with enough of a layover before your return flight to do the coin show, I'd be happy to pick you up at BWI, do the coin show with you, and then return you to BWI on my way home. Just a thought.

Meg that is a great offer but due to physical limitations, extreme arthritis in both knees and incontinence (every 2 hours), I only fly if I really have to. The biggest problem are the knees, it is painful to walk the 100 yards at the range and standing around is tough after about 10-15 minutes so TSA would be a challenge, coin shows are actually a bit tough unless I can find a place to sit for a bit. Boy getting old sucks! Now that I have retired and have plenty of time the body is breaking down...

the Train however be the solution. However thanks for the kind offer but I won't be coming down there. If I went anywhere I would go to the FUN show as my brother who I haven't seen in 3 or 4 years lives in Tampa

Do it if only to see your brother. But for every numismatist, FUN is a bucket list item. Something about having 700+ dealers on the bourse floor along with the seminars and Heritage Auctions is something to experience.
