Hi everybody, I was just wondering what a fair trade would be for 40% half dollars. I did get them from CRH, and I know most of you have more knowlege than I do about a fair trade.

I am looking to possibly trade in 74x 40% half dollars(10.9446 oz of pure silver)... for any of the following

90% silver american coinage(nothing of collectible grade)
.999 bars, preferrably American silver eagles, or Canadian Maple leafs.
Junk morgans/peace dollars

Basically, nothing with much of a premium, the coins can be damaged, tarnished, etc, as long as they have the value in them as to the current melt price.

I will be trying this for the first time at a coin show, just wanted to know some more info so I do not sound like an idiot or get ripped off.

Thanks,
BuffaloBoy

If you go to a coin show.. you will not get the best prices in exchange. They know that 40%ers are the lowest of the low in terms of silver next to war nickels. Just my experience with dealers. Many will low ball and sometimes there's a good deal but you have to haggle with them to get it. You'd have to find someone who is not usually a seller of you're looking for. In your case, you'd have to find someone who might have a lot of rare coins but want to get rid of junk silver. However trading them 40%ers for them, you'd probably have to give up more. It's like bargaining with those guys from Storage Wars. LOL

If you want to get the best value, you just wait until you have $1000 melt value worth and sell to AMPEX. I'm sure they do trades too since they have a big inventory. Their inventory is in terms of junk silver coins is probably bigger than all of those dealers at a show combined. In my dealings with them, they offer the best price compared to local dealers. However it does take forever to process everything and get the check.

Why trading silver for silver? In the end, they are still silver, and since you are trading up, you actually loss out in the end!!
Why don't you either save up more, and either sell it for $$$ , or trade them in for Au???

May I suggest you take a few rolls of 40% junk halves to the next coin show and "trade" some of them for a very nice collectable coin. For example....about a year ago, I traded a dealer at a show
seven junk 40%ers for a beautiful 1857 Flying Eagle cent in "Fine" condition. He had it in his tray
for $43.00. I needed a Flying Eagle Cent for my "Type" collection and this was a beauty. In reality,
trading the junk 40%ers I got at face got me the Flying Eagle for $3.50 out of my pocket. I also
traded a roll of junk 40%ers for a very nice 1819 Capped Bust Half Dollar in VF-20 grade, so I only
"paid" $10 bucks for it "out of pocket". Some will say, "Yes, but you still traded silver valued higher
then the $10 bucks." And they are right.....but within a week I pulled more than twenty 40%ers out of boxes to re-group the silver anyway. Granted...silver was priced a little higher back then, but now I'm
even more glad I made those trades. Just a thought for you to consider, because there are plenty of coins shows and plenty of dealers interested in getting your silver for trade of one of the coins they are trying to sell. Think about it!...Again, Just my suggestion.

i was asking the same questions before then I found out its really pointless as I am just basically trading AG for AG, and I lose % along the way. The best way to trade it though, is to sell on ebay and then buy on ebay. I plan on keeping my 40% unless its a fair trade but I dont think that will happen.

If you're CRHing with the intention of "hoarding" silver, and waiting until the price hits $100+, doomsday, the eventual fall of the dollar, or whatever other reason(s), then it probably makes little sense to trade 40% for 90% or .999 as you're gonna lose value in the trade. No one is going to swap higher grade(s) for your 40% close to "even money." I would expect the swapping price to be somewhere around 3-4 junk 40% halves for 1 junk 90% half...give or take a little depending on the dealer.

However, if you're more collector than hoarder and trading something you have for something you want, then by all means go for it. One thing to keep in mind, you'll probably come out ahead if you can sell your 40% to a collector (or another dealer at the show) and then just pay cash for what you want. Cash prices are usually a bit better than "trading" prices. Shop around at the show. You might find a dealer paying well for 40% and another selling a bit cheaper than all the others. Obviously you'd want to sell to the guy paying the most and buy from the one selling the cheapest.

Bottom line is that its your silver to do with as you please. No matter if you sell it, swap it, or keep it, as long as you're happy with the deal, then it was a good deal. :icon_thumleft:
