I found this roached quarter under and old deck in a backyard. Now it must have been under a cement foundation cause it originally had cement and green oxidation on it. Anything around the house good to clean old silver. I just want to be able to read the date so I can tease my neighbor about it! I think its a 1915? Thanks for any replies and HH,

Re: SUPER ROASTED SLQ WITH CHEESE

elctrolosis will work... nice find MR TUFF

Re: SUPER ROASTED SLQ WITH CHEESE

Nice find

The SLQ didn't start until 1916. I'd try using the least intrusive cleaning method you know, as a 1916 SLQ is worth a few bucks, quite a few actually.

I did run electrolsis on it and it looks to be a no mint 1918. My camera died so sorry no pic. but thanks for the replies.

Re: SUPER ROASTED SLQ WITH CHEESE

i hear alot say not to run elect on silver coinage if realy like to see pics of the cleaned coin and specs on how long you let it cook for? sweet find none the less :icon_thumright:

Re: SUPER ROASTED SLQ WITH CHEESE

That is a shame, those things are harder to

come by than Barber Quarters.

Re: SUPER ROASTED SLQ WITH CHEESE

Thanks to all,

I let the coin "cook" last night for about an hour. The electrolysis method I use is a motorcycle charger from harbor freight. It has the clamps built in. Put it in a 5 gallon jug with the top cut off. Then you hook up one end to the coin and the other to a piece of steel and presto you have results.

I'm charging my camera and then I'll send some pics.

Thanks,
Fish

So I ran electrolysis for about 2 hrs thats all.

It is an amazing technique!!

Get a close-up of the 1918, please. Perhaps wishful thinking on my part, but my eyes see an overdate 1918/7.

Try some lemon juice, will work wonders

cool. love those standing libs :headbang:

Nice SLQ. I'm still trying to find my first. I would always start with rubbing the coin with baking soda first before moving to electrolisis. That cleans the coins up nicely most of the time -Garbageman

Thanks for all the replies. I have never dug a barber quarter but consider myself lucky because I've now dug two standing libs.

Is there a reason they only minted these coins for 14 years?

Yep, the Washington quarter was supposed to be a 1 year commemorative for his 200th birthday. Unfortunately, a combination between the Washington quarter being popular and the SLQ being unpopular with congress made the change permanent. It really is a shame they weren't minted for much longer, they have to rank as my favorite US coin...

Your example actually has very little wear if it wasn't for the crud on it. High grade SLQs go for quite a pretty penny.
