Suspender

Okay, posting here although I kind of already know what this is… I'd go with a suspender clip.
Can anybody tell me more about this one specifically? Date? Any particular significance?

I've seen examples very similar with a patent date of Mar 7 1871, with various animal (and other) designs

That particular style was popular from the early 1870's, as Taltahull pointed out, to the 1890's. After that, different designs were introduced to the market and that type of suspender buckle was generally phased out.
