Metal Detecting
Spent time searching through the iron at the 1850's schoolhouse on Sunday. Found two more coins. A beautiful 1883 Indian Head and a beat up Wheatie, 1934, I think.

You certainly used the right word to describe that penny. Congrats on that find.

That IH is fantastic!

she's a beauty!

Big difference in patinas for those two. IHPs are made of bronze. Lincoln is copper. Just the addition of a little tin to the copper makes a world of difference. Beautiful indian!

The IH is nice! Must have been lost in the 1880's ?

A great looking Indian - congrats !

The composition of a 1883 IHP and a 1930's wheat penny is exactly the same.
95% copper and 5% tin & zinc.
Only the early IHP's were of different composition.

Ah, but something is different. These are two cents, “pennies” that I have been carrying in my pocket for about 3 mos. Not metal detector finds, these were taken from circulation. They were both common BRN cents. I wanted to see the patina change with “circulation” in my pocket. Also in my pocket, a 1945 silver quarter, a pocket knife, and whatever change I get during the week. Lincoln has remained brown with slight lightening. The IHP has changed dramatically. Please explain this difference. I’m looking to learn.
