So I have always called these war hammers. It is 3.5 inches long in about 1.5 inches wide. Is that the correct name? What do you guys call them? I have 6 of these that I have found over the years in Iowa and Minnesota. It looks more like an axe in the second picture, it's not. It is almost perfectly round and flat on one side.

That's a nice piece. I have found one in my life. Yours is much nicer than the one I have.

I have always called them axes, call it what you want you found it:laughing7:and its a dang good find:thumbsup:

thats what id call it ,nice find.i think it was used to dispatch downed animals in peace time though

looks like a 3/4 grooved axe. very nice find.

I have always wondered why they aren't worth more, they are not easy to find.

I think the confusion may be because we can't see the blade end. If it's blunt, I'd call it... I don't know. I guess I would call it a war hammer. That puppy on a rope, swinging around would do some damage! I'm sure there's someone here who knows more about hard-stone. Cool- thanks for the show! Yak

The "blade end" is blunt like a hammer. I'll try to post a picture of it today.

Is the end where the Blade would be battered any at all? It looks like a Grooved Maul to me.

Nice artifact

A beauty she is ,the poll and semi flat bit show some hammering- a maul is born .

When they show battering, we call the smaller ones grooved hammers and the larger ones grooved mauls.
