I just got home from searching the remains of an old lock keepers quarters on the James River and Kanawha Canal (And I think I spelled it wrong!) Found very little-- a couple of flat buttons and this sword guard--all very deep. I think the area has been flooded many times over the years. The guard, besides having several file marks on it, has what appears to be three random punch marks and the number 22. I had to clean this area a little too vigorously in order to be able to read it, but I will re-patinate it so that it will once again blend in with the rest of the piece. My question is--is this guard identifiable to any particular sword because of the stampings, or is this a generic thing? Thanks so much for looking, and especially if you can shed any light on it's origins!
