a friend of mine has a sword he got after his father died(sorry no pic. at this time). on the handle it is stamped P.4. underneath the P.4. is stamped N. and underneath the N. is stamped 182. there is also a very lightly stamped 2 in between and just above the P.4.. it appears as if the 2 was stamped first and then the P.4. was stamped over it. the other stamp i see is on the blade up near the handle(just underneath the hand guard or whatever that is called) its in the shape of a police badge(?) with a star stamped in the middle of the badge. to me it looks to be some sort of calvary sword but im not savy in the sword department. if i can get a pic. on here i will do so if possible. any general info. would be greatly appreciated................thanks, mark43

With out a photo of the Blade, Any Markings and the Handle No Can Find.

Gotsta have a photo.

here ya go. If your running XP right click your pic ,then click edit, then at top click image then stretch. Then change 100 percent on horizontal and vertical to 50 percent and close and save. repeat or use different no. for different size. I did 50 then 75 on your last pic.

it is a "modern version" of a US military model 1860 "wrist breaker" type heavy calvary sword --like the type used during the civil war era * the handle and guard give it away easily --the real civil war era ones have leather wrapped handles with wire wrapping to secure the leather to the handles.andles . :icon_thumright: ---

this is a later issue "dress sword" of some type most likely --still very nice

1- Save the pic in a file,
2- Move the pic to IrfanView or Paint to resize and/or crop.. :icon_thumright:

looking at the handle grip area --looks like a more modern made -- model 1860 "wrist breaker" type heavy calvary saber *(sword)

what would be the significance of the stamped numbers and letters?

inspector marks -and serial numbers for "tracking it"

the sheild with star on the blade near the hilt -- most likely is a proof mark / inspection mark -- which normally means the blade passed the strength test and is good and not brittle (wiill not snap or break easily under pressure )

so its not an actual civil war sword? any idea when it was made? 1900's or later or is it just a conversation piece that caught someones eye and they just had to have it. my friend has been bugging me to find out as much info. as i can since he didnt have any info. from his father on where or how he got this sword or how old it is.

The star in shield is the inspection mark for Chile. I think it is a Chilean cavalry or police sword circa 1895-1912.

*Edited to add some photos.

This example is listed as a "Chilean Officer's Sword Circa 1890"

thanks for the tip on the chile "proof mark" --humm chile made blade post civil war --say very late 1800's in to the early 1900 's era = the handle grip yells me it not civil war * era -- they were leather with wire wrapping during the civil war era

You can see the letter 'N' was made with a chisel, so not a arsenal or maker mark, but probably what they call a rack number.
