I am looking at a map of Bull Run at this site:
https://historicprincewilliam.org/county-history/maps/battlefield-of-bull-run.html

The bottom of the map says blue represents the union and red is for the confederacy. I don't see a legend so there are some parts of the map I am unsure about.

There are blue and red rectangles filled in. However some blue rectangles are not filled in. What do the hollow blue rectangles represent? See the attached pic called "Hollow Blue lines."

Also, there are red symbols with 4 points that I can't make sense of. See the attached pic call "Red." What do these represent?

At the bottom of the map there is an explanation of the dotted and solid lines. But there is no explanation of the red four pointed items.

Confederate Artillery maybe.

Close to the same symbol on their kepis

Looking at the large map (from the link - and with no key) I am guessing the solid bars are the final position of the battle and the hollow bars are the initial position of the battle. I see the same generals names in two places.

The squares appear to be emplaced/dug-in artillery positions (high ground).

I don’t think so, the same color symbols are mixed in with the Union Forces to the NE as well.

If you go to the link and zoom out you will see a description of the lines. dotted or hollow rectangles are where they camped the day before the battle. Solid rectangles are where they staged on the day of the battle.

I would say that the red symbols with 4 points are the symbol for Confederate forts/Cannon emplacements. They are shown to be on top of hills.

Yes, I think they refer to gun emplacements. The hilltops are the giveaways.
