I went out this afternoon and found a few coins and some buttons. One being a half cent and the other being a 2 cent. Everything being good I walked back to my house and washed the dirt off them to find dates etc... According to the books my half was not minted in 1801, but it says 1801 on it. Please look and tell me if I am crazy.

In ten years of detecting in New England, I have never found a US half cent. Your coin is stellar! Well done.
You've got to get up here to upstate NY, oldest coin I have found is a 1735 1/2 reale, but plenty of coins in hiding like Vermont Coppers, New Jersey Coppers...

I lived near Rochester during my youth, and was interested in local history, but did not know about metal detecting. It looks like I missed some great experiences! Congratulations on the 1/2 and 2!

I really dont like to overly clean the coins because they are on the fragile side, however I did take my Andre's pencil set out and did give it a cleaning. 1804 is the date.
