Tenn. Trio Dug 6 Eagle Buttons:CS Staff Officer's Button + Dman's Carved Bullet

On Wednesday, Dman and I returned to the Indiana and Ohio CW U.S. Infantry camp. We had nearly 30 relics and Dman had the best find-a nice carved fishing sinker. Steve Sylvia, Publisher of North South Trader’s Civil war Magazine, believes it may have been carved as a watch fob because he’s never seen such a finely detailed sinker. You will probably see it in American Digger Magazine’s “Just Dug” section later this year. He scored another knapsack hook that brings our total to 7 at that camp as of that hunt. I dug my 66th 3 ringer from that site and 26 are pulled which is unusual. I dug 3 rotten eagle buttons and was left holding only the backs and one rim from a 3 pc. button. The first pic is our Wed. relics and the 2nd is Dman’s finely carved bullet.
Today, the trio returned to see if we could wring out a few more relics from that site during the 3.5 hours before Tenn. Josh had to report to work. A front came through middle Tennessee last night and the temp. was in the high 40s with a sustained 15-20 mph West wind and gusts to 30 mph. At times, you had to watch your balance. Dman and Josh returned to the known tent lines and I scouted out a new hot spot and was successful in finding one. We were over 150 yards apart and every time I looked at them, they were digging and they said I was digging whenever they looked over at me-LOL. Our combined recoveries are in the 3rd pic. All 3 of us scored eagle buttons and button backs. Josh dug a large coat size CS Staff Officer's button in the 4th pic (we think). He will get it aurthenticated and a better pic next week. We hope to get a back mark when he cleans it. This is a U.S. camp and we have only recovered 2 Enfield bullets there that were used by both sides. Dman got 2 more broken iron spiral “wipers” used to remove the cleaning rags to make 3 he has dug from that site. Josh recovered 2 more knapsack hooks and Dman dug one to make 10 recovered from the camp to date. Dman has a nice cuff size GS eagle button. I had 7 more 3 ringers to bring my total to 73 from that camp so far. We had 46 relics from todays hunt. The gusty wind was cool today but we were all digging relics and really didn’t notice-LOL. Since a lot of members like to see bullets when dug, I attached a pic of a 3 ring "Big Boy" .69 cal. bullet that I recovered in the Wednesday hunt with Dman.
Watch for my article “A Conversation with William Hays-Buttons in His Blood” in the next issue of North South Trader’s Civil War Magazine and I understand that my article about my best finds of 2011 is in the next issue of Western & Eastern Treasures Magazine but I don’t have my issue yet. I also have 4 articles scheduled for publication in American Digger Magazine in 2012 with the first to appear around May. The Tennessee trio is frequently mentioned in these articles. Happy Hunting from Doug, Josh, and Quindy.

Very nice Quindy. Mike and I didn't find very much but had a good time looking. Is that Militia button 1 piece? Glad to see that site is still giving up relics. I'll try and call you within the next few days and you can tell me all about the hunt. Congrats on another good hunt! Tennessee digger

LOL, I'm new here but it seems like you're running for some kind of office with all those article updates...I'll have to break out my calendar book to remember them all. Nice day of digging, btw, that button at the bottom that is very blurry looks very much like a Confederate Staff Officers button

Just running for the county line Hoss-LOL. I'm just one of many on Tnet who free lance for the relic/treasure magazines. Many times, you can't correlate the Tnet name with the author's real name. Examples of others who have written articles for the magazines I mentioned are: Dman, Buckleboy, Modern Miner, RTDE 3, etc. I know of some others who have articles that have been accepted and will be in print in 2012. It's more enjoyable reading the stories if you know something about who they are, have enjoyed reading their posts, and know their track record. Welcome to Tnet!!

Re: Tenn. Trio Dug 6 Eagle Buttons:Early Militia Button:Dman's Carved Bullet & More

Quindy, just like I DIG Relics Hoss, and like I told you on the phone, I'll bet that the button that Josh dug is a Confederate staff officers button. You guys have really done well there with all of those good finds. Get him to check that backmark and see what it says. Tennessee digger

You boys are killin' me. If your wives ever toss you out, you can come live with me. Bring your detectors (and snacks).

Nice dig! :icon_thumleft:

Re: Tenn. Trio Dug 6 Eagle Buttons:Early Militia Button:Dman's Carved Bullet & More

You boys had a fantastic day! That is quite a haul of relics. The carved bullet is first rate, and it is always nice to see knapsack hooks come up--it means that there are many buttons to be found.

Would love to see a good quality photo of the militia button at some point. So it's a one-piece eagle? 1820s?

Best Wishes,

Buckles

P.S. Check your PM's. I just dug my oldest coin in 20 years of detecting today.

H, the soil has not been kind to the buttons there. Only a few have survived and the mineralization is high there compared to other sites in our area. HH, Q.

Have detectors-Will travel Richard. For a camp used for less than 2 weeks, the volume of relics remaining there has been more than we ever dreamed of. HH, Quindy.

BB, it's a 2 pc. button and Josh will make a better pic. It's looking more and more like a CS Officer's button based on the phone pic he sent. Looking forward to your post and congrats on your oldest coin. You sounded excited late yesterday afternoon and you didn't even know the date then. HH, Quindy.

Quindy you guys are off to one heck of a start this year!
That carved bullet is a really cool relic!
Too bad Dman didn't have that one in time for your article on carved lead a few months back.
Good Huntin' Guys!
He said he had always wanted to dig one just after he wiped the dirt off it from last Wednesday. It would have fit well into that article Rob. It's the best carved sinker I have ever seen. HH, Q.

Nice CS staff, that button would get my heart pounding. Looks like the same type as Alberts CS22. That caved bullet is beautiful. We have dig alot of US relics in CS camps, especially those dang eagle buttons. HH
