Tenn. Trio Dug 6 Eagle Buttons:CS Staff Officer's Button + Dman's Carved Bullet
On Wednesday, Dman and I returned to the Indiana and Ohio CW U.S. Infantry camp. We had nearly 30 relics and Dman had the best find-a nice carved fishing sinker. Steve Sylvia, Publisher of North South Trader’s Civil war Magazine, believes it may have been carved as a watch fob because he’s never seen such a finely detailed sinker. You will probably see it in American Digger Magazine’s “Just Dug” section later this year. He scored another knapsack hook that brings our total to 7 at that camp as of that hunt. I dug my 66th 3 ringer from that site and 26 are pulled which is unusual. I dug 3 rotten eagle buttons and was left holding only the backs and one rim from a 3 pc. button. The first pic is our Wed. relics and the 2nd is Dman’s finely carved bullet.
Today, the trio returned to see if we could wring out a few more relics from that site during the 3.5 hours before Tenn. Josh had to report to work. A front came through middle Tennessee last night and the temp. was in the high 40s with a sustained 15-20 mph West wind and gusts to 30 mph. At times, you had to watch your balance. Dman and Josh returned to the known tent lines and I scouted out a new hot spot and was successful in finding one. We were over 150 yards apart and every time I looked at them, they were digging and they said I was digging whenever they looked over at me-LOL. Our combined recoveries are in the 3rd pic. All 3 of us scored eagle buttons and button backs. Josh dug a large coat size CS Staff Officer's button in the 4th pic (we think). He will get it aurthenticated and a better pic next week. We hope to get a back mark when he cleans it. This is a U.S. camp and we have only recovered 2 Enfield bullets there that were used by both sides. Dman got 2 more broken iron spiral “wipers” used to remove the cleaning rags to make 3 he has dug from that site. Josh recovered 2 more knapsack hooks and Dman dug one to make 10 recovered from the camp to date. Dman has a nice cuff size GS eagle button. I had 7 more 3 ringers to bring my total to 73 from that camp so far. We had 46 relics from todays hunt. The gusty wind was cool today but we were all digging relics and really didn’t notice-LOL. Since a lot of members like to see bullets when dug, I attached a pic of a 3 ring "Big Boy" .69 cal. bullet that I recovered in the Wednesday hunt with Dman.
Watch for my article “A Conversation with William Hays-Buttons in His Blood” in the next issue of North South Trader’s Civil War Magazine and I understand that my article about my best finds of 2011 is in the next issue of Western & Eastern Treasures Magazine but I don’t have my issue yet. I also have 4 articles scheduled for publication in American Digger Magazine in 2012 with the first to appear around May. The Tennessee trio is frequently mentioned in these articles. Happy Hunting from Doug, Josh, and Quindy.
