A sub-freezing hunt today...


Today was a record cold hunt for me....the coldest I've been out in for detecting...20-23 degrees between 12:15 and 4:15 today in Baltimore. Very happy with the results. The 1864 IHP is an "L" variety. Don't think I will ever find a hammer and pewter pig again on the same day. Shield (no rays) and V-nickel (1906). 2 nicks, 2 wheats, and 2 Indians to go along with two clad quarters and two clad dimes...oh yes...there were two charms.

Thanks favored papa. I think you're right on that. It was the first thing my eye was drawn to. It does appear to be a double strike.

I'm with you on the "fighting" aspect. If I'm too cold it's harder for me to go slow and focus, but Sunday was good in that regard.

I'm looking at the "L" and then see that it appears to be a double-die. Can you post close-ups of the whole obverse and reverse of the IH? Excellent hunt in the cold weather.

Thanks aj. Aspects of the letters in AMERICA, as well as the 8 show evidence of an overstrike, but then I'm not certain why only parts of the obverse look this way; nothing like a double-strike is evident from the reverse.

Wow! Your 1864 L also has machine doubling! Nice find.

Thanks Skippy. That 1864 is the fourth of that date I've found in this park since September 2015 and the second "L".

Great find, I dug a 1864 not that long ago, I swear I cannot figure out where that dam "L" is supposed to be? If the coin was in a different pic, Obverse with the date at the southernmost point. How would the "L" be oriented with the same North, South, East, West orientation?

I love your other finds too, that hammer is so cool I want it!

Hey "lost it", I agree. That's the second photo I've taken, and the images are the best, but there's something there that suggests a double-strike.
