The 20-23 hunt

A sub-freezing hunt today...


Today was a record cold hunt for me....the coldest I've been out in for detecting...20-23 degrees between 12:15 and 4:15 today in Baltimore. Very happy with the results. The 1864 IHP is an "L" variety. Don't think I will ever find a hammer and pewter pig again on the same day. Shield (no rays) and V-nickel (1906). 2 nicks, 2 wheats, and 2 Indians to go along with two clad quarters and two clad dimes...oh yes...there were two charms.

Thanks treblehunter. Yes, the "L" does read 90 degrees off the line that you read the date. From the bottom-most feather there is a vertical strand from the headdress; along that strand is where you'll find the "L", if your 1864 is so marked. The closeup in this post was taken so that you may read the "L" from left to right.

Your IHP looks like it has a good amount of underlying detail. Have you tried putting it in boiling hydrogen peroxide to attempt to remove surface dirt? I sometimes do that and follow-up with some baking soda to rub away stubborn dirt.

I'll try that, after those pix I did hot peroxide, I'll try a rub. Thanks for the suggestions.

Even if you can't see the L, you can tell if it's a 1864 L or not by looking at the bottom of the bust, on the L coin the lower part of the bust/the collar if you will below her beaded necklace, will be "pointed" on the non-L 1864 it will be rounded, compare the two from these photos.
