The Bow Showed Up Late to North America

Found this scenario interesting. Most of what I've ever found would be considered arrow points and maybe smaller darts points.

The Bow Showed Up Late to North America, Then Divided Hunters Into Two Camps for Centuries

The bow arrived late in North America, and what happened next split ancient hunters into two worlds.

John H. Blitz’s paper “Adoption of the Bow in Prehistoric North America” (published in North American Archaeologist in 1988) has traditionally been regarded as probably the most complete and informed assessment of when Native Americans first acquired the bow as a replacement for the atlatl. Blitz provided this map as an approximation of the adoption dates:

The bow seems to have come into America from the North, and is a relatively late technology. Blitz concluded: “In this case, a continent-wide perspective reveals a north to south chronological distribution for the initial adoption of the bow. Multiple episodes of independent invention or extensive movements of people are rejected as explanations in favor of a secondary diffusion process. The large-scale pattern suggests that this technological change is not to be explained by highly localized ecological conditions, but rather by a historical process of intergroup contact and competition. For those who adopted it, the bow as a weapon conferred a competitive advantage over groups who retained the atlatl and a rapid process of dissemination and technological replacement occurred.”

That’s interesting. So many times something triangle is often referred to as an arrowhead but most are darts, spears, or knives. It’s funny seeing a 6 inch by 2 inch rock get called an arrowhead. It would take a bow and arrow the size of a barn to shoot it.

This is interesting too. I’ll see if I can get hold of that and read it all. Thanks.

Thank you. I’m not sure I followed along with the thought process they had other than the arch. Record has gaps. Maybe different predators up north that required different tool for defense - not hunting/food gathering. It is after all only about survival.

The coming of the bow in the late woodland period turned NA into the killing fields. Indian cemeteries like Dixon Mounds showed burials of individuals killed with arrow points.

...the world over.... every time there is a better way to kill people, populations expand at the expense of next in line

Oh I’m sure many skulls were crushed with clubs prior. The general population expanded greatly during the Woodland period compared to prior, did it not?

I heard that alot of the larger points were used with an atlatal. Which was in use before the bow...i think? I dont collect points myself but have found a few. The coolest was a clovis that i did keep but lost along my travels of life, unfortunately....
