I'm for anything that separates us from the slobs in the sport and casts a good light on the rest of us. I love the idea of a park clean up and extend it to a vacant lot or stream. That's an easy one to get in the paper.

Such a technique might work well here in Louisville--to meet up and to a trash pick-up without detectors (since we are currently banned from detecting in all the Louisville parks). I think that might give a chance to mention the ban in the newspaper and raise public awareness and sympathy. If anyone else thinks this is a good idea, I'm on board. I have good connections with the "Down-n-Dirty Diggers" MD club in Indiana, and I bet I could get some of them involved.

Great idea. I don't belong to any club, but will pass along any good deed, MD wise, on to whoever can make good use of it.
Have volunteered my services to county sheriff, stuff like this should not be overlooked.

Yes, first would be to do something newsworthy either as an individual or as a group. Then either invite the media to witness the event first hand or write the story yourself, complete with photos and details and send it to the local media.

Once we have a scrapbook in place featuring media coverage of our "Good Samaritan Deeds" we could then place links to it all over the internet, including websites, chat rooms and e-mails etc.

That's what I'm talking about. Next time you volunteer your metal detecting services to help the sheriff with an investigation, get a news story about your good deed put into your local paper.

Can you imagine these headlines?

"LOCAL METAL DETECTORIST HELPS POLICE SOLVE CASE"

Now the whole town will know what a good guy you are and it will make us all look more appealing. You may even get some metal detecting work or leads from it. One thing for sure you will have an easier time getting permission.

Aside from forwarding "good deed" photos & story lines to the news media, another effective tool is a personal portfolio album of maybe 15 or 20 photos of the more interesting things you've recovered.

Under each photo is a brief caption that describes what it was you've found and all your "special" recoveries. . . like class rings returned to their original owners or artifacts donated to local & State museums. . . go in the front of the album. The album that I put together and keep with me in the car at all times was instrumental in educating several "busybodies" about our hobby plus, garnered some nice compliments as well.

Most good deeds are in the Honorable Mention section.
How about a " IN PRINT" section just for scans of or links to newspaper clippings or any printed articles about good deeds done. This is a bit different than just telling the story in an Honorable Mention post.
Only posts of the "print" should be in the section, a subsection could be made, just for the comments.

Just throwing an idea out here.

I still think this is a great idea. Its the delivery that I am having trouble with. Not much of the general goes to T-Net to read about good deeds. I understand about the local public seeing an article written in their newspaper but storys of that nature are short lived.
You need to be able to reiterate your cause over and over again and when needed.

Like this idea.

You are correct, however if we are able to get more and more good deeds recorded in the media and then posted here in our "Hall of Fame" or whatever it gets called, we can then place links to it all over the internet, including websites, chat rooms and through e-mails etc. Then the stories would reach the whole world and have a much longer life. That would also give us the ability to reiterate our good deeds over and over again and when needed just by using that link. Creating a lasting good impression of us and our hobby. Not to mention the added positive exposure gained for T-Net and it's sponsors. (hint, hint, Marc)

Good idea, though it does seem to be some duplication of the honorable mention forum, and I think the forum is really cluttered enough with the number of categories already without adding a new section. This is my main complaint with the forum setup, is there are too many categories already. Honestly, I don't think I ever even looked at or saw the honorable mention forum until we started this discussion in the other thread.

I'd almost rather see many posts in one forum with an icon - say a gold star or halo for good deeds, an Ohio icon for the state of Ohio, etc. Then I can sort the posts however I want, and could also control my view of the messages that show up (for instance, I could block Tennessee from the messages that show up on my view)

Maybe a subsection in the honorable mention category? I am still in support of moving the "good deeds" banner to the top of the page and "best finds" banner to the bottom though. This puts the emphasis on the right behavior rather than "finds at any cost"

Also, permissions and copyright may be an issue for published items (or tv coverage). Many newspaper links change or expire, so even a link becomes useless after 120 days or so, or the link changes once the item is archived. I think this would be the biggest challenge to published accounts... dead links.

That's why my idea is to archive the scanned or photographed article on Treasure Net, then the story that we can link to will never disappear.
