"The Cause"

I am asking for your help in building up a resume about the positive side of metal detecting.

What if we started keeping an online scrap book of all the positive newspaper clippings that show what metal detectorists have done for the community. (a scanned or photographed copy will do)

Such as helping people find lost valuables. returning found class rings, helping police at crime scenes, etc. Then we could access it whenever needed to use it for our cause.

We could start by having our local newspapers write up our own stories of interest that show what we have done to warrant recognition. Such as helping Archaeologists do field work, donating articles to museums, returning class rings, etc.

And in the meantime do research to find already published stories of good deeds to add to the forum.

Do you think you could get your metal detecting club to put their heads together and come up with something they could do as a club to gain positive media recognition? And have an article written up in the local paper? Think of the impact clubs or individuals from all over the country could make by having their human interest stories published.

Stories of how much fun handi-capable children were having when the local MD club took the time to show them the joys of our hobby. Let your imagination be your guide and help us give our hobby an image boost, something we can all be proud of.

Perhaps Marc would create a forum just for placement of positive press clippings concerning our hobby.
Does anyone else see this as a good idea?

Please post your thoughts after reading this.

Re: Please Help the Cause!

Hi Good Guy,
GREAT IDEA!!!!!! I think the first step is to have Marc " Perhaps Marc would create a forum just for placement of positive press clippings concerning our hobby. " That way there would be a place to post all the old stuff, and a place for all the new stuff to go. I would also suggest that Marc send out a email, asking everyone to post any related things ( old or new ). With Newspaper clippings etc....

Re: The Cause!

I think this is a brilliant idea actually! I wonder why no one has thought of it before. Have you contacted Marc about this idea?

It's a great idea, but how does it differ from our Honorable Mention forum?

Re: The Cause!

GG,

This sounds like a worthwhile idea.
I have a couple of local newspaper articles about myself and our club.
They are a few years old, but positive none the less.

Our club has also gone out two or three times, to locate evidence at crime scenes for the police department.

I say "Go for it!"

Re: The Cause!

OK new post lets think here. Marc has an area here already with many amazing stories in "Honorable mention". Good deeds by members. There have been many clippings posted with good deeds already done. You could possibly start a new thread there and research and post any articles from the past and have an instant archive to draw from of "Good things from Metal Detecting"
Now the idea is to share the positive benefits of the hobby and I do not think giving a link to someone you want to impress immediately is a good idea. But we may have great archives right?
Sooooo..
What about compiling your information into an instructional pamphlet in a downloadable PDF that can be printed that you can disperse at will ?
It could have a cover with title of choice, code of ethics, associations that our community helps.(police, crime investigations, recovering sentimental items for owners,Archaeologist in historical significant sites discovered, working with children(4-H guy) the list could go on.
1. Say who we are....Group of enthusiast dedicated to the recovery of lost and forgotten history,,,,,
2. What we do....... We work with private landowners and PROPER authorities in the recovery and discovery of...................
3.How we operate..............Fall back again on parts of your code of ethics.

You could probably format the PDF for a tri-fold pamphlet to carry with you and pass out.
Keep it clear and a quick read. If they are interested they will go to the link we have created.
Have a place for YOUR contact information to be filled in.
Also the link we created of "Good Things From Metal Detecting".
Do not affiliate this with a club or T-net but travel as an ambassador of the hobby.

You can give this to someone when asking permission to hunt. They know who you are. What you do. How you operate. You may end up with more than you can hunt. Imagine a park official asking what you are doing and instead of going duhhhhh hand them the pamphlet. Might educate someone.
Of yeah also incorporate in it how they can also get involved in the sport/hobby. This really needs to be a recreational sport instead of a hobby. How can you deny someone in their sport ?
I often re read what I wrote about us being hunter gatherers and collecting wisely at the bottom of my page
Hope this helps. I may be way off base for what you wanted. If so point me in the right direction.
Your cause is worthy.

Best of luck

It could be a totally new forum called "Community Service" dealing with the positive effects that the metal detecting community has done in the past and is doing today.

It would not be much different, except it would be a place to only post actual media news clippings or links to printed news stories, even from non member press releases, The difference being no posts would be accepted with out a form of media coverage attached, or link to the media coverage in case of copyright issues.

Perhaps create a forum called "Hall of Fame" where if your good deed has media coverage your story qualifies for induction. Otherwise it goes into Honorable Mention.

Re: The Cause!

sounds like a pretty darn good idea. It will take some action on my part, I am willing to do. any little clipping from any newspaper will be good. I wonder if it would be ok to archive some old magazines, to get the ball rolling. ? I live within 3 newspapers area,, each paper has a outdoorsman type columnist. in between fishin season and hunting season. maybe they could be prodded into a nice artical about family hobbies. such as metal detecting,, anyhow there is my ideas for now.

Re: The Cause!

the cause can always use a bit of positive press --- many detecting folks do not do "good deeds" for the "glory" ie to get noticed in the news or local papers ---but merely because its the right thing to do. ---as such over the years many detectorist good deeds have often gone unsung and unknown by the public at large. -- can getting a batch of "positive press" notes together assist in swaying public views at some town hall type meeting that could effect your right to detect in certain places ? --who knows but can't hurt any thats for sure.

Re: The Cause!

I like the idea of positive press for our hobby, maybe we can organize a clean up day for some of the parks in our community so that folks can see that we are actually helping out...I posted on another thread about the needles and pulltabs that I collect in some of the parks, maybe, if people could see some of the trash that we pull up out of the totlots and get rid of, it would help. I do think that it would be a good thing...larry

Treasure In The News also has some negative stories, or stories of legal battles over salvage rights, and at times, strings of replies griping about governments, archaeologists, and current laws. I honestly believe that some of these types of replies are less-than-flattering to our hobby and our website.

I think I know where GoodGuy is headed with this, and I think this could be a jewel in the TreasureNet crown--full of good deeds and good publicity for the hobby, with none of the downside. Including local newspaper articles (perhaps even scanned, with a link to the newspaper's homepage), links to information online, MDists sharing finds with school children, benefit hunts for charities, etc... The possibilities are endless, and it would be a broader section than the current honorable "mention" for returning lost items. Posts like the one that showed photos of all the sharp items removed that day from a tot lot could also be a candidate (I recall that was a good post, but it would take a while for me to track it down). I think the broader the better. And to call it "Hall of Fame" and perhaps place it just underneath "The Best of TreasureNet" would invite many more views than the current slot for "honorable mention" on down the page. So both the new name of the section, as well as its placement, would contribute to its visibility to guests.

Such a section needs to be seen--especially by the guests of the forum, and any changes to the current status quo will have little impact unless the new section is placed more prominently in the TreasureNet hierarchy of topics.

Best Wishes,

Buckles is right as always. I am for it but see this is almost covered already by some of the other forum topics. There should be a way for such topics to be gathered with the links to the newspapers article. Most detectorist aren't interested in helping the hobby and only want to stop the other guy from providing competion I am sad to say.

Re: The Cause!

The "Gift" of Metal Detecting
Something given to show friendship, affection and support
I think a Special Forum with all the positive proof may finally open some eyes that need to
understand our Hobby is also a public service and not just a personal recreation.

I would even go and extra step and open up a personal email account and post this idea as a private ad on certain sites for the public to have the opportunity to share there positive stories and other detectorist to share there public recognition of being a good Service to there community and than with permission, post it on T-net with the online scrap book.

I also have a couple of Museums that have been donated to, that I think would be more than happy to share a Thank you from Our Services.

Re: "The Cause"

Gosh, this is really a great idea.

I can see where we could use the stories and events in the 'honorable mention' category, but. for the most part, we use them for things that have happened directly to people we know, or who are in our local areas. Also, I think we take for granted all the little things that we do.

The biggest part would be to be able to collect these and let the 'other' folks, the non-treasure hunters - know what we do and what we stand for.

I have a very old photograph from a newspaper article, about my two uncles, who were metal detectors way back. They helped the police search for bodies, with their detectors (sad, but true), including underwater (the newspaper I have).

The idea being, not to single out one person, but all the things that treasure hunters do for "free" to help their surroundings and their communities, just by being us. (everyone who treasure hunts knows - we don't toss garbage, but usually pick it up and dispose of it - everyone who has hunted creeks, swimming holes, beaches, etc., knows how many nasty things we have taken away - huge hooks, hypodermic needles, garbage, pull tabs that cut childrens feet, etc.) They are all small things that may not make the honorable mention list, but certainly make a community safer for kids - we have donated some things to a museum, and I'm sure there are many others who have. (etc., etc).

The next step, of course, is to get this type of information to the people who really don't know. Letters to the editors is/might be a good start for "the campaign", otherwise known as
The Cause".

Re: "The Cause"

Someone could flip through the back issues of the W&E sister publication World of Treasures for older stories - additional information can be found in the book by George Mrockowski or something like that that was published by Ram books. Culling through the honorable mentions site here could yield more references and finally a long time google search for phrases like "detectors aid police" "detectors help" or even "metal detectors" will yield thousands of stories. You can also set google alerts to get daily messages of stories that fit your search parameters. good luck, siegfried schlagrule

Re: "The Cause"

I'm for anything that separates us from the slobs in the sport and casts a good light on the rest of us. I love the idea of a park clean up and extend it to a vacant lot or stream. That's an easy one to get in the paper.

Such a technique might work well here in Louisville--to meet up and to a trash pick-up without detectors (since we are currently banned from detecting in all the Louisville parks). I think that might give a chance to mention the ban in the newspaper and raise public awareness and sympathy. If anyone else thinks this is a good idea, I'm on board. :) I have good connections with the "Down-n-Dirty Diggers" MD club in Indiana, and I bet I could get some of them involved.
