I spent three afternoons playing hard in the field and found a few keepers.
A halfpenny, Indian head penny, Large token, three buttons, a cheap ring, civil war era harness buckle cover, and my first silver colored 10 guage casing.
When I found the large token I thought for sure it was another LC. Oh well--I will take it.
Thanks for looking and best luck to all. Merf

Great post.....the pictures turned out well nice to see some of the fields you boys hunt over there

Great finds! That's one of the frustrating things about our hobby; you can find a rare date, otherwise quite valuable, but it's blemished badly. We all have a few just like that Indian :'(.

Very nice finds and pics!

Thanks Nick, Nana, Tyre Kicker, Halfdime ,and Goldiver.
I have been fortunate to get permission to hunt some good spots lately. :icon_sunny:

Super nice finds....I also found a buckle like yours with the heart on it. Ive have seen them described on ebay as a civil war period 1861...1865 bed roll buckles by a couple different sellers. Does anyone know if this is true? Im just curious about the age and it use. I found mine about 6 inches down where a very old house once stood.

Thanks Undertaker----I found one last year that was bent up.
From what I have gathered and in my opinion they are harness buckle covers from the civil war era.
They could have been used as bed roll buckles but it might just be a selling gimick on E-Bay.
No one knows for sure.

Great finds again Merf.

I posted a buckel like that here about 2 years ago. It caused quite the dicussion at that time.

I made the big mistake of cleaning it and lost 95% of its value.

That's one great site you found.

Awesome pictures Merf. The token looks great. Thats as good as a large cent in my book. Are they going to plow that field again this year?

Merf, congrats on some awesome keepers. You did very well. That token and half penny cleaned up very well in the tumbler.

That buckle with the heart on it is IDENTICAL to one that I have found also in a cornfield. How ironic is that? :tongue3:

i found one exactly like that wensday but mine is missing the back ring :( i didnt have any clue what it was

I read an ask Mark Parker article a while back, Cant remember what year the magazine was because at one time I had alot of back issues. He says the buckle was mis-identified for a long time as a confederate Civil War bedroll buckle. You still see them on e-bay id'ed as such. His opinion was that they were not Civil War related. From the time period? Yes...but not from the War. I still think it's a great find. I've seen a few being posted lately. Haven't found one myself yet. :-\

CW or not its pretty cool i'll have to move mine from my cool but ????? display to another one with a buckle tag...

They aren't really "Civil War" items, but they are the right era...

And they actually aren't buckles. They're Harness Buckle Shields (went over top of the actual buckle to keep it from snagging).

Nice finds, Merf! I've not seen that good of a result with tumbling before...perhaps it's that white aquarium gravel. Great work on cleaning those--your method is Quite Fine.

Oh, and fantastic photos too.

Thanks Evolution-----I talked to the landowner and he said they don't plow any more but they do disc the field befor they plant. Might turn up more good targets.

Thanks Badger, Randy, TRHunter, Dan, BCS, REblive, Buckleboy, and Weasel.
I found a couple more keepers today---Prolly post tomorow.

Cool relics as usual, Merf. Love the Canadian bank token. Great job on your pics. I like seeing the fields you hunt as it inspires me to keep searching those farm fields. Keep digging!\\

p.s. Thanks for showing the "junque pile;" lets the new people see the reality of MDing.

Thanks Anne-----I dug a lot more junk than that to get those finds.
I picked out the best junk for the pic. LOL ;D
