Hi everyone. If youā€™ve read my other posts about this farm that Iā€™ve been detecting then youā€™ll know that Iā€™ve found a few ā€œDandyā€ buttons and another button from the Colonial period there.
Well, I think I may have found something special today.
Iā€™m going to post pictures from my phone because Iā€™m in an area of NJ affected by Tropical Storm Isaias and we donā€™t have power.
If these arenā€™t good enough Iā€™ll come back and add better pics when I can.

Confession: I washed the coin off when I got home and lightly brushed away the mud with a toothbrush. Iā€™m now very sorry I did that, but I had no idea what was under the mud beforehand. I thought it was ā€œjustā€ another Large Cent. (This Farm is spoiling me)

And even if this isnā€™t all that special, itā€™s still the oldest coin Iā€™ve found to date.

I think that reverse says 1783, right?

Brian,

Looks like you have a nice Ireland Half Penny 1766 to 1782.
That Celtic harp is a sure giveaway you are dealing with an Irish coin. It is a Hibernia half penny. Hibernia is the Latin name for the island of Ireland. Congrats on your find!
