A few reasons, to make a pendent often with a coin from birth year or marriage year or something like that, another is to keep it safe on a string or sewn into the inside of a coat for emergency money. Other reasons are two holes to make it into a children's toy, a hole in the center to use as a washer in a pinch and some other random uses

Nice stuff that holed largie would make my day and that button toward the bottom looks like something good but I can't quite tell what it is. Congrats on a bountiful spot!
