The GOP's latest filibuster threat: Gun Control

by: Harold Maas

Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and Mike Lee say they'll block any new restrictions on gun ownership
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) got a lot of mileage out of his 13-hour, old-fashioned filibuster of John Brennan's confirmation as the new CIA director. Yes, Paul failed to stop the nomination, but he did call plenty of attention to the Obama administration's use of armed drones. And now Paul has another target — gun control.

Paul, along with fellow Tea Party-linked senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) is hand-delivering a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Tuesday, threatening to do whatever it takes to block any new restrictions on gun ownership. Reid plans to bring up legislation in the next few weeks that would crack down on interstate gun-trafficking and require background checks on all gun buyers. He dropped a call for banning sales of military-style, semiautomatic assault rifles and high-capacity ammunition magazines, but said he'd let lawmakers pitch them as amendments.

With his last filibuster, Paul undeniably tapped into deep misgivings about the drone problem, winning praise from members of both parties. He and Cruz and Lee might find that this stunt, however, is going to "blow up in their mugs, says Prairie Weather. Because on guns, these guys are well outside the mainstream.

Underneath the public's continuing horror following the Sandy Hook shooting may well be an overwhelming feeling that "we're fed up" with the damn NRA and its co-dependents. Reasonable gun restrictions look tame compared to the indignity of another filibuster in the Senate — and particularly if it succeeds in burying sensible prerequisites for legal gun ownership. [Prairie Weather]

Many gun-rights advocates, however, are glad Paul and Co. are picking this fight. "This is actually a brilliant move," says Katie Pavlich at Townhall. If nothing else, it will call attention to the gun-control positions of vulnerable Democrats running for re-election in 2014.

Reid has already had the ability to protect Democrats from voting on the assault weapons ban, but a filibuster on criminalization legislation would force Reid to either try and stop the talking, which will bring attention to gun control efforts of vulnerable Democrats, or will be forced to allow a filibuster to continue, preventing a vote on the legislation. [Townhall]

Reid might actually welcome GOP obstruction, says Ed Morrissey at Hot Air. "A filibuster would play into his strategy to paint the GOP as a party hijacked by its extremist backbenchers." Reid probably thinks a filibuster will help Democrats in 2014, as the bill as it stands doesn't contain the controversial assault-weapon ban — just the far more popular expansion of background checks. This could also give him "fodder to revisit filibuster reform." Plus, he'll eventually get his vote anyway, as old-school talking filibusters can't go on forever.

In the end, though, the Senate version won't go anywhere even if it does get a floor vote. The House will not pass any version that requires firearm registrations, which is what Senate Democrats want to pass. A filibuster that focuses on that narrow issue may raise its profile in the same way that the previous filibuster did for drones, but it’s questionable whether that will move the needle — or whether it even needs to do so. [Hot Air]

Glad to see our wonderful politicians are worried about the economy, unemployment, deficit, dent, etc, etc. why try and solve any of these "unimportant issues" when we can all do some political grandstanding (ie free fundraising). This is just great!!

Can't hardly wait for 2014 elections...

Republican Party better start talking about solutions to the important issues this country is facing or they are losing my vote this election.

Glad to see that some "conservatives" have finally grown a spine.

Listen guys, I have no idea of what your version of compromise is. I know What's his name's version is: "If you agree with me, it's compromise. If you don't, you're the problem."

In order for there to be compromise, BOTH sides have to be willing to bend. It doesn't mean one side browbeats the other until they capitulate . . . which is EXACTLY the tack What's his name has used for over 4 years now.

HE HAS N E V E R BEEN OPEN TO COMPROMISE with the opposition. When he doesn't get his way, he pitches a fit like all the other spoiled children and goes whining to the low information voters (who don't know what working together means) about how mean the republicans are and how they refuse to compromise.

WHEN HAS HE EVER GIVEN AN INCH ? ? ?

I'm truly happy to see someone standing up to him the way certain groups stood up against another president . . . the German president, later Fuhrer, Adolph Hitler. Unfortunately, like those groups, the opposition may have come too late. It appears he has strengthened his hand to literally silence the opposition in Congress with the amassing of weapons, ammunition and other hardware necessary for a coup.

I'll only be surprised it it DOESN'T happen.

English translation:

"The republican party better bow to What's his name before he starts his `final solution'. Otherwise they won't be around to see the sparkling new socialist order."

I heard that millions of people are already being sent off to the FEMA re education camps and that light blue helmets are goose stepping down PA ave. right now as we speak. It's begun. After all these centuries the new world order has finally begun!!

Stop mocking the thread....

Well stocky I have to agree with you ,but you spelled FEMA wrong (It should be School system) And the light blue helmets were traded in for Quest cards (Free lunch) and yes the new world order may have begun.

Ehhh, filibustering a little like picking on a witness,s credibility. Effective with the right bodies in seats. It is some thing to fight with but with multiple bills in the wings, some allies from the side would help more.

Yes, best to let those kids go hungry - it's their fault by the way for being lazy. Lets tell them to drop out and get a job. That's real good for our society and economy.

And watch out or you will be accused if kicking the thread.

no answer? I think you are here to disrupt.

Never saw a kid with a Quest card. Do a little homework. By the way you can buy false eye lashes with that card:laughing7: If kids were going hungry why are their so many FAT ones running around?

I know you were just joking but you do realize that obesity rates are highest among low income people.

The American people, really need to understand, these gun control bills will not protect anyone. It is a false promise, just like the
many many many empty promises from before. It is based on emotion not fact. Or reason.

WE cannot ignore that we used to have more freedom, that we are losing our freedoms at a very great rate, and we need to put a stop to this, now peacefully and legally.

You are certainly entitled to your opinions but I'm curious to know what freedoms you think you have lost? I don't feel like my freedoms have been eroded at all.

Thank you for posting this article for us Crispin.

In terms of gun control, I would suggest to give it a try...often once something is given a chance it eventually comes to some kind of middle ground solution!
I personally think using the (don't know the technical term) fingerprint solution would be best..that way no one except owner who has been screened can use it!!!!
