The Great Plains Hunt of March '07
I know stoney56, his wife Evelyn (Evie) and Burdie are lurking out there waiting to see if I dare post anything about our Sunday hunt of the Great Plains of northern Oklahoma. Hah! I'm going to do it! Stoney56, Evie,Burdie and I met out on the plains at Ponca City, home of the stoneman. We had 3 sites we had been talking about detecting, one a reported Indian campground, another a recent buy out and demolition of several dozen homes on polluted land adjoining the Conoco refinery, and another I am not free to identify at this time. We first set out for the campground after a big breakfast at a local diner. We were almost too stuffed to bend over, except for Burdie who to his credit he just had toast and Orange juice. Of course I blew my diet all to hell and had some bacon on the side of my omelet. Anyway, off to the Indian campground, somewhere northwest of town. The area was a point of land adjoining a good size creek where there was also supposed to be an old creek ford or crossing. When we arrived the landowner was less sure of the actual site than he had had Stoney to believe. So we were pretty much on our own on pasture land adjacent to the creek. Well, I guess we didn't find it. We dug up dozens of pieces of scrap iron from old farm equipment and Stoney found what may have been part of a clay pipe with the stem missing. It was hard to tell for sure there in the field. No one was skunked but just didn't find the hoped for artifacts, so our source of information must have been off a bit. After a couple of unfruitful hours there we decided to go to plan B. ( The site I can't identify at this time). We found thee was a ceremony being performed and a crowd had gathered so we just made a survey of the site and moved on so as not to arouse interest in our equipment. You know how it is when someone else discovers your best site. Soon it could be covered with people detecting if we didn't keep it confidential for a while at least. Things looked good but couldn't risk giving away or plan. On to plan C (the refinery buy out). By then it was nearing 3:00 pm and had warmed up considerably even though we still had a brisk west wind. Temp in my Durango was showing 62 degrees and it was sunny out. We hit the ground running at the buy out site and wasn't long until we were finding good sounding targets every few steps. This time we dug quite a bit of junque, pieces of everyday items that the homeowners once used, some old gas stove fittings, a tiny diecast car, and etc. I almost built myself a capgun by digging up pieces of 3 different guns, a hammer, a grip, and the side plate off another one. I finally hit a clad penny and could tell I was getting hot now! My next target rang out loud and clear in the silver coin range, showing a dime at 6". Sure enough I dug down right at six inches and out popped a 1942 Merc dime all shiny and in pretty good condition. Anything two years older than me and in good condition is a keeper!
Another hour of so and more junque and it was getting late in the day , nearing 5:00pm and old tired bones and muscles were starting to balk, so I walked, stumbled and almost crawled back to the truck and called it a day. Stoney, Evie and Burdie soon joined me. Although we had not had a treasure finding day as such we all agreed we had a good time and I for one got to see some new country and eyeballed a really promising site for the future to be continued until a later date. Evie had her camera but I don't know if she took any pics or not. I drove home some hour and a half away and put my Merc. in a special place where I could get it out and examine it later and yep, it was still a merc. Sorry no pictures that I took, but we'll see if any were taken and post later. So, Burdie and Stoney chime in if I forgot anything. I'm not at all sure what all you guys dug and I am sure the folks on T- would like to hear your perspective. Monty
