Well it's been raining here again in Central Kentucky.. Raining, raining raining. It's rained off and on all day today (Friday, April 11th). "April Showers" perhaps? But! It wasn't raining yesterday. Oh sure, it was cloudy, windy and threateningly overcast all day, but no rain. So after a few errands were run and
"honey do's" done, I was able to gain permission and what's more, the COMPANY of my dear wife to go out and detect a little bit. Of course Lunch, or rather an ice cream stop might have been a bit of persuasion on my part too.
As I said, it's been wet herebouts for some time now so again, I kind of stayed away from lots of grass and low lying areas that I might otherwise hunt, which is to say, I hit a couple of tot lots. One local park that I've been to repeatedly but not for a couple of months, and one at a local grade school (after school of course). First was the park though. Not a whole lot to tell about that little jaunt. Met a nice elderly man and his grand daughter who were playing in the park and the little girl took an extreme interest in the funny stick I was waving around. I don't think she fully understood or even marginally understood what I was doing even after trying to explain it. She did however understand that I could find neat things with it, even if they were mostly pull tabs and buried soda cans. I found a couple of clad coins and some odds and ends of metal, like a harness strap "clip" from a pair of football shoulder pads. I haven't seen one of those since I was in High School some .. er.. well, a good long while.
Not finding much noteworthy at the park, and it was still too early to check out the school playground, I took my wife to a local DQ for a blizzard. Her's was fine, but mine was soup. Apparently the highly professional staff on duty (high school kids?) were having a problem with the soft serve machine. I gave up after getting the second blizzard replaced, and drank it with a straw... milkshake style. *sigh* Oh well, it was a break. On to the school yard. Dang! Must have been some afterschool activities or something, the school yard was crowded and so was the parking lot. Oh well, I knew I had other things to do.. like go home and make dinner. My wife and I had set out some chicken and pork chops for grilling that evening. So a Grilling we did go.
After a nice leasurely early evening of grilling and dining, then cleaning up. I and my wife again headed out to the school yard to see if the crowds were gone. And they were, for the most part. With the sun sinking low on the horizon we found the playground all to ourselves, and two young couples who were on the swings and sneaking kisses and embraces when they thought we weren't looking. VERY YOUNG couples.. probably in junior high at best. And at an elementary school playground? Probably lived very near the school. Anyway, I began swinging my detector, and finding goodies right off the bat. A little clad here, a key there, a car over there, a .. A CAR
A Jaguar SS 100 to be exact. COOL.. Bright Red (what was left of the paint). Too bad it was only a Matchbox, 1982 vintage. All four wheels still attached and turning. Plastic windscreen, headlights and grill, and steering wheel.. most were bent and deformed from being under the ground for so long, but they are all still there. Pretty neat find I thought, especially after I cleaned it up later at home.
I also found one half of a walkie talkie set, it was just under the surface of the grass, and definitely not workable any longer. Again though, a neat find, to me.
I found another key, some more clad, a string of plastic beads, can slaw and a charm from a bracelet. I also found another crucifix..or rather a cross anyway. The only thing on this cross was the bling! While I suspect the cross to be made of silver, there is no stamp or markings, but the stones I'm sure are probably glass or maybe CZ. Still though, a really neat find.
The woodchips also turned up some other odds and ends, like a zipper pull (one of several actually) and this bottle of Absolute !

All in all, for the amount of time spent hunting Thursday I didn't do too badly. Sure, I didn't find much in the way of spendable coin, but I had a load of fun and unloaded a lot of stress. That made it "Happy Hunting" in my book.
