Historically, black pirates were rare but did exist. Men like Diego de Mulatto challenged stereotypes across the Caribbean and led viciously successful pirate careers.

Beneath the surface of pirate history lies a neglected narrative – the existence of black pirates in the Caribbean. Contrary to popular belief, many Africans on pirate ships were not voluntary adventurers but rather enslaved individuals. Spanish colonial society holds the key to unveiling these forgotten tales, with figures like Diego de Mulatto emerging from the shadows.

Diego, born in Havana during the 1610s, faced discrimination due to his mixed heritage despite his aristocratic lineage. Seeking vengeance, he aligned with the Dutch under the alias Lucifer, orchestrating a daring attack on the city of Campeche in 1633 that showcased tactical brilliance and a thirst for retribution.

Diego's career spanned decades, marked by a reputation for mercy amidst the cruelty of his Dutch allies. His complex persona, clever disguises, and acting prowess added layers to his enigmatic character. By 1673, Diego faced relentless pursuit, culminating in a dramatic showdown reflecting the ruthless world of piracy. While Diego's narrative echoes through time, other black figures like Francis Fernando, Abraham Samuel, and Nicholas the Concepcion add depth to the untold stories of black participation in piracy. These tales underscore the intricate dynamics of race, power, and opportunity in the pirate-infested Caribbean waters. https://www.ancient-origins.net/videos/diego-de-mulatto-video-0020169

If you want to find free black pirates, you'd have to look at Spanish colonial society. A vast majority of their privateers were native american, african and mixed-race. Whilst most of their names have gone unnoticed, we certainly know the impressive career of one vengeful character, going by the ambiguous name of Diego the Mulatto.

Access to the archives in havana are the key....much information is stored here, and many narratives of wrecks, salvage, piracy, etc.etc.etc!! I dive with the "bronze cannon corp." In the search for "el angel bueno" and "concepcion" 1563 galleons of Pedro Menendez. Some of our discoveries have been direct results of these archives, and my boss has been several times. He can translate old Spanish, and what is appearnt is that official documents in Spain are void of any information that would not be relavent to the government, and other information was held back in havana for political reasons that could cause someone to lose there positions, or worse yet there heads !! Very relavent information was held back intentionally and was conveniently left out of any official correspondence to Spain!! The more relavent information is contained in Havanas archives !!
