I'm attaching a newspaper article from the Tampa Bay Times. This is an opinion column pertaining to the persecution of fossil collectors. I've attached a link to the entire article at the bottom.

In part the article reads:

Yet two years ago the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission launched a $130,000 undercover sting to round up 14 desperados who have been charged with more than 400 felonies linked to looting the state's ancient artifacts.
That sounds nefarious, doesn't it?
Except in this Confederacy of Pilferers plot, the booty collected by the suspects was of marginal value. Indeed, as the Tampa Bay Times' Ben Montgomery reported, the state of Florida, which already has some 500,000 artifacts in its historic archives, has declined to accept another 10,700 pieces of antiquities found by 150 divers in the state's rivers.

Thanks for the info. I say finders keepers...

It shows the ridiculousness of the government and the over zealousness of the police state we now live in.

I just read Daniel Ruth's editorial, and came on here to update the thread on this topic in the Indian Artifacts forum when I saw this thread...I have to say this may be the first time I have to agree with Daniel Ruth....I can't believe I just said that!

The "Man made item over 50 years old" is beyond ridiculous and over-bearing!

Maybe something can be changed while there is public support??

Good luck getting the government to relax and back down...the government has no fear of the people anymore.

But they have a voracious appetite for our money, and a paid permit system (like the fossil permit) brings in fresh money, while the elitists state archies stance does nothing but cost money for prosecution and enforcement.

Money changes "the game" every time.

Let's all be careful picking up spare change on the ground in case it is dated 1963 or earlier, antiquities such as pennies dated 1960 are an essential part of the archeological past of Florida! I can see it now, headlines on Channel 13 news, "A 1957 dime found in the parking lot of Walmart" as the camera fades back an area taped off to prevent contamination of the site and armed guards protecting it.

Don't forget to leave those old-school beer pop-tops alone as well...you never know how culturaly significant they might be, and throwing them in the nearby trash can could be a misdemeanor...and taking them to one off of state property is a felony!
