Hello everyone,

Been out detecting with my hunting buddies the past couple of days, and scored a few wilvers, along with a Utah sales tax token, and a small sterling religious charm. The '52 quarter was down about 7". At the bottom of my plug, I saw the rim of it lying underneath a tree root. A beautiful site!! ::) The hunkin' Aussie penny was found last week. When I saw the edge in the hole, I thought it was a large cent....oh well. Also found this key yesterday. Never found one like this before. To find this wilver, I dug about 37 wheaties out of the ground, along with a small assortment of clad, iron and other trash items. The park is just an old hunting ground in the heart of Los Angeles. I've found about 47 wilvers this year in the areas I hunted the past two days.

Speaking of quarters, I separated all my clad quarters from my other clad finds to get a rough estimate of my $$ amount. I have about 2200 quarters this year. I've already turned in 1100. I think the money will be used for gas funds to find more wilver....I'm not changing a thing with my 'tector.

Thanks for looking,
CAPTN SE
Dan

Nice finds especially those mercs. I wouldn't change anything either. Kirk does get you LYAO from time to time.

Great finds as usual, keep those silvers coming, hope you have the best of luck. WTG!

Captn,
Great finds as usual...love the silver.

The key looks like an old railroad barrel key. Does the key have any letters or writing on it? I had one last year that after doing some research I figured out what it was for then noticed most of these types of keys have writing on them. So I cleaned my key up some more and was able to track the company down in old town records. Also found the orginal lock patent online for the company which filed the patent in 1853. Good luck.

Good job, Dan, you struck wilver and that is what it is allll about! Too bad that penny didn't turn out to be a coppa...damn! You will get one soon!

Holy crap, those quarters could get you a new detector...hmmmm...maybe a White's? Heck NO, you are kicking but-tocks with that SE! I wouldn't change a thing, buddy!

P.S. The chicks dig KirkPA's mullet, too. ;) :D

NJ,

My hunting bud told me yesterday he thought the key might be just what you confirmed. Thanks. Mine does not have any writing/numbers on it.

I have given it some thought, and with the numbers you are finding, you should move to New England.

The silver Roosies are great and everything, yada yada, but you should be plying the town greens of Mass, VT, and NH. There, seven inches down, and you are at least at Barber age, if not older.

Better yet, I am getting an SE and moving to New England.

Stay where you are Cap'n, HH'ing!

Plehbah,

I had a friend who went to the New England area a few months back hoping to strike a bunch of old silver. No such luck. The finds are older there at that depth, but definitely less frequent. I think for shear numbers, you can't beat the area I'm in. Yes, a lot of common silver, but I'll take it.

Where are you located at? Maybe I'll take a trip there to rape and pillage your town.... ;D :D

Still some great looking finds.

Nice load Dan. You don't need to change ANYTHING now...cause you already made the switch to an EX2 coil. You and that coil are a killer combo. Keep poppin' those silvers out. Geez I love this hobby!

Thanks, Bryce. I love that Ex. 2 coil. I used my sunray 8 on Monday to locate a merc and a rosie. The merc was 1 inch away from one of the old beaver tails, but I still heard an edge of the silver coming through.

It always amazes me how such finds (1952 Qter) gets so deep in such a short time. I would love to watch time lasped photography of it happening. How does it happen?

WTG on more silver.. I havent been getting out much.. I can feel the rain approaching soon, and cant wait for some moist ground.. Boy will i hate getting mt SE all muddy.. but im looking forward to diggn...

Still learning the SE havent been out as much as id like..

Im coming to LA so you can teach me this thing... lol

So Mon Capitan,
Would you care to disclose the settings you have on your SE?
I use my 8'' stock coil and 5'' sunray stealth at max sensitivity AUTO.
My gain is 8, recovery DEEP, Variability and limits 10.

How do you feel about the max sensitivity and auto setting?
Do you think the SE will over-compensate and I will lose depth?

(I'm new)

Thanks everyone!! ;)

Chase, I've always made my detector's settings available to everyone on Tnet. I will always share my settings; I will not disclose places where silver abounds near me ;D

As for auto sens., I do not like it. It can overcompensate or reduce your set sensitivity too low....however, that depends on the ground conditions of your area. Areas with little mineralization will not affect the sens. too much while in auto. Areas with high mineralization will reduce sensitivity too low. To be safe, I just set my SE at manual, and usually hunt anywhere from 22-30 sens. I can still pull coins down to 8+" at around 22-25. My gain is also set to 8. I like this setting the most. Your variability/limits are the same as mine also. I hunt neither in DEEP nor FAST. Both filters are off on my machine. I prefer this setting the best after trying each of them. I have found silver while one or the other was set On. Over time, I've noticed that if you have FAST on, you could possibly miss real deep signals because the machine will "clip" the signal to a small chirp on deeper targets, causing you to easily pass over the deepies. In DEEP mode, the machine will require more processing to make decisions about targets in the ground, thus you may miss a really deep good target next to surface trash while in this setting. So both are OFF for me.
I see you didn't mention the "Sounds" setting...that's important. I hunt in CONDUCT. All my silver this year has been found while hunting in conduct. mode.

Good luck. Hope you make some great finds with your machine.

Thanks Capt.
Yes I use Conductive sounds as well.
I will try the depp and fast filters off.
One thing I tried was sens without auto but my machine was freaking out with falses in the upper right corner!
I kept saying, "there can't be this many quarters right here"!
I hit auto and cranked it up and it leveled off.
I will keep trying,
again, thanks and good hunting,
Chase

Chase, many falses in the upper corner means your ground is highly mineralized. When you go into auto, your machine reduces the sens. so far that you no longer are able to pick up the hot rocks in the ground.....bad news....less depth for sure. I have a little trick for you, which was told to me by a master Explorer hunter in my area. It will help out with the high pings in the upper corner without you having to adjust the sens. You need to create a custom discrimination pattern, and blacken out the top 4 pixels in the upper right corner of your display. Be sure to use the smallest pixel icon when you reject the 4 tiny pixels. So your final discrimination pattern will look like your current one, with the addition of the 4 small pixels in the upper-right corner blackened out. This will eliminate a good deal of that high pinging, while still allowing you to get the deep silver.

Good luck!!
