The World That Was Is No More... CRH halves then and now

I just plowed through the last 2 of the first 6 boxes of 2014.

Box # 1 SKUNK
Box # 2 SKUNK
Box # 3 SKUNK
Box # 4 SKUNK
Box # 5 SKUNK

Finally the saving grace rescuing me from Skunksville.

Box # 6 one 1969.

Then I came across my tallies of some sporadic CRHing I used to do just 2-3 years ago.

24 boxes and only one skunk
1 box had 55 silvers including 2 Bens and 3 90% Kens.
Another box had 37 silvers including 4 Walkers, 3 Bens, and 5 90% Kens
Another had 31, another 27. Oh the glory of CRH of the years gone by...

I remember meeting a man in a bank who told me that he began CRHing just a few years before me and he amassed 80 rolls of solid Franklins.

I really am kicking myself for not doing more CRH when the returns were so good, and the value of silver was higher then too...

At that time I didn't have the resources I have now, which reminds me of the fable of the squirrel who, when his teeth were young and strong, had no acorns to eat, and by the time he amassed a collection, his teeth had grown too weak to chew them.

But I won't make this mistake again. Given the interest in CRHing, it's only a matter of time until silver halves become as rare as quarters. So as long as there is something there I will keep at it.

I did 32 boxes this week and found 1 40%er in my last box... ughhhh

Very well said, I agree. I have been casually crh'ing for 10+ years and volume hunting for the past 4 years. I wish I had started sooner; however, my financial situation wouldn't allow it. Now that I have established a system for my coin roll hunting I am able to achieve the volume I wish to do while maintaining a comfortable lifestyle and social life. I just wish I was able do half dollars prior to 2010. Since then, I've run through multiple skunk streaks of 20+ including a ~55 box skunk streak back in august, 2011.

I am certain that with the lower price in silver that more silver will be dumped into the system since people aren't heavily advertising to buy precious metals; however, with an abundance of newbies being introduced to this hobby every day, mainly as the "get rich quick" type of personality, our finds will certainly diminish rather quickly.

The key to this hobby is moderation, pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered.

Even though I dont have the experience- been crh for 1 1/2 yrs with NO good boxes- I talked with a big volume hunter a couple weeks ago and he stated the exact same thing- 2-3 yrs ago his find where 20+ a box with an occasional 50+ ag box
Now he said hes lucky in his 50boxes a week to get 20 total

I don't post much here, but am an active lurker.

I have been CRH off and on since the late 1970s. We have been through this cycle before. In the 1980s silver got tough to find. Maybe not so much the 40% halves and war nickels, but everything else was virtually non-existent in rolls for me. I did not discover this forum until recently, but was absolutely blown away by the amount of 90% halves you folks were finding 2-3 years ago, that stuff "should" have all been gone by 1986! It just goes to show how that stuff makes it back into circulation in significant volumes. As people become less and less aware that coins were once silver, all those hoards and change jars get dumped for face value. History suggests that we'll see good times again in CRH.

We threw the 40% back, at $40 silver, 1980.

No reason to keep the 90% a few years back, because the value was not there. It's all relative.

Maybe it was like that for a few, but not all. When I got back in, around '08-'09, the competition was fierce. If I ordered 10 boxes, half were skunks, and the others might hold a couple 40's. Some districts were great, others, not so great. The archives are great reading!

I didn't know I could actually order boxes until I asked the bank finally about it after hearing about people on youtube doing it in March. Every week now basically I get a box, and before that I always did CWR and they usually didn't turn out the best. I would rarely come upon a war nickel, like one or two a year. In 2013 I found a shocking number of war nickels; some 45+. 15+ buffalo's, my first ever indian which was a GREAT milestone, and a 1910 v nickel.
Also in 2013 I scored my first ever 1939 D and 1939 S nickels, which was a true shocker as well.

I bought halves back in '06-'09 and I remember getting like 30$ and finding like 8 40%'s.
Now with the advancements with the internet and how youtube is in no means of lacking videos about CRHing and tutorials on how to do it and what to look for, it's basically impossible. Never give up or quit doing what you do best in the hobby regarding CRHing or just cherry picking for good prices. Last year as well I stumbled upon 25$ in 40% kennedy's, and this was literally at a bank in a city with over 20,000 people and the bank was new and people were in and out of it a lot. The city actually has actually quite a bit of coin collector's in it. It has paid off from getting a mini hoard of like 400 wheats and old canadian's mixed in with rolls from one bank, to silver coins at a new one. To say the least, I actually ironically went through a huge collection worth thousands and the guy was my dad's friend who lived in the city, just down the road from those area's. The city is madly involved in coins, the library orders issues of Coins Magazines, etc.

However since then its been skunks all the rolls have dates of what's in them. Then the bank vault women told me a old man comes in and clears it out and drops them off their. She tells me if there are any unsrarched ones. The bank that I go to is where Walmart drops their money off I'm thinking Walmart accumulates half over time so I'm going to ask if I can just buy the roll I'm sure they would rather carry a 10$ bill rather then a roll of halfs.

However I'm addicted still trying to find a bank that is in a small rich town where the people don't care about the investment so they don't bother crh. My search is still going lol

My dad suggested going down maybe southern ohio and go to banks down there (at least for me, idk about you, but small populated areas) i guess they have the best stuff.

But have any of you guys thought of buying coins from stores? They have rolls hell even mark rolls and trade rolls with them. Some people think its interesting but if they get to interested they might start searching the drawers before rolling them lol.
