After 3 days of rain and sleet I was dying to get out and swing today. But I've been worrying about going back and trying to again get permission from the elderly lady who owns the field since she was a little hard to deal with last time. I've been looking for a way to connect with her, and I really got lucky today. After a little research I was able to determine that her maiden name was the same as my mother's, and it turns out she's from a nearby county where many of my relatives are from. She's also very good friends with an elderly man I happened to speak to a couple months ago, and it turned out I was related to him. I know all this sounds confusing, but the bottom line is that I may actually be a distant relative of this woman, which we both thought was very cool. Then to top it off, she's great friends with my neighbor across the street who we have a great relationship with. So it took friends and family to finally seal the deal. Anyway, permission was quickly granted and I spent a few hours in the field and did a lot of roaming around looking for another hotspot. I didn't think I was finding all that much, but when I got home I was surprised at all the keepers I had. I was unable to get any colonial silver this trip, but did make a really nice find with the recovery of a 1795 liberty cap cent in great condition. I also recovered a large and complete 1700s shoe buckle, but all the iron workings have formed one big conglomeration of rust and it'll be difficult to clean. I also dug quite a few buttons and buckle pieces, and a few other doo-dads. I think the hotspots have been hit pretty good, but I know there are some nice random artifacts and coins still hiding underneath that soybean stubble. And I need to check the shoreline at low tide as early 1600s pottery has been found there. At least the permission issue has been taken care of so that's one less thing to worry about. Going to return tomorrow to another nearby site where I dug a 1594 coin weight last time, and I'm really looking forward to that.

Great finds Bill!

The liberty cap is beautiful. As are the buttons! Too bad bout the buckle rust, I hope you can clean it up a little!

Wow Bill, you are becoming a Copper King! That is a stunning Liberty Cap! I like that tombac with the star design too!

Nice colonial digs Bill. The liberty cap cent is in beautiful condition. Congrats on a great hunt!

Bill, again super condition on the relics, that 1795 in great shape. Gave a quick look, it is not the most common variety like mine, but I think it is still a Rarity 1 Sheldon 78 variety. Will recheck later unless someone else confirms or denies it being a S-78. http://www.largecents.net/collection/coinpics/s78.jpg

What a fantastic liberty cap!!!!! Love all your finds. Congrats on them and gaining the permission.

Wow, great Liberty Cap, Bill. I like those buttons, too. Must be some kind soil.

Man Bill you guys have some very friendly soil down there. That copper is incredible!

That Liberty cap is in sweet condition Bill. Awesome finds as usual.

There you go again digging the nice stuff while I am at work slaving away...ha ha nice find bud, looking forward to getting back to the money pit.

That's a beautiful coin there! Great finds!

How sweet it is. WOW, just awesome finds. Congratulations on some great finds.

What a great day! Not only have you been the copper king this year but they're all in practically AU grade condition. I finally figured out that those brass rings were used in fabric buttons.......and don't debate me on that :tongue3:

Bill, Great finds - the Liberty Cap is a looker !!! I just voted BANNER , and I'm a little confused as to why at post #18 I'm the first to do so ? Perhaps a few of the others voted as well - just didn't mention it . If condition is somewhere between VG. and Fine , according to 2013 Redbook it's a $400- $1000 coin and
those values are for the more common varieties . One thing is certain- these don't come out of the ground in this condition very often !

I love reading these post. Here I only dream of relics that old. That was some really good net working to gain permission. I look forward to what you find near the water. Thanks for sharing.
