Knew that would get your attention.. I was bound and determined regardless of weather, of hitting the ocean city beaches..well, let me paint a picture of this adventure first..I wrapped my dfx up like a mummy using bright yellow tape to hold all the plastic on the parts so not to get it wet. foot warmers inbetween all the layers of socks I had on.. laced up boots.. long undies, hand warmers in my gloves... ( I sure as heck hope you caught me on first street Jeff, ya know the person who was blowing in the wind)... well got there, great low minus tide...was syked ( could barely move due to the multitude layers of clothing, so I start.. ok ok it was a lil bit windy... well, I am going about my detecting business ( ya like that one huh) then after about 2 hrs..I noticed rut row the tides comming in..well, here I am trying to pinpoint a target and I started laughing like a fool, the wind was blowing so hard that I was weaving in the wind, now you try to pinpoint when your on the verge of being blowing away.. I mean lordy, I am not heavy, but man I dam near got blowed away... then it got colder, then I thought I was in some middle eastern desert, with the sand strom that blew in... it was like OK GIMMIE A BREAK here will ya...so after losing the feeling in my finger tips I said I am OUTTA here..... I get to the car..I have as much sand in my carry bag as on the beach and sand on and in me in parts you dont wanna hear... I froze my buns offl.but I hung in there for 3 hrs.. all my crappy finds are soaking as I have no clue what they are but it seems to be all clad... no jewelry.. was very disappointed in that one... yea yea I know, if ya dont swing over it, your not gonna find it... well, I have yet to find any jewelry with the dfx...grrrrrrrrrrr sooooooooooo thats my froze my buns off and almost got blown away day... now I am thawing out.....

Ouch, years ago I tried hunting in weather like today on the beach and the wind and the sand blowing makes for a combination where it is no longer fun detecting. I could feel every cold hint you mentioned. I think even the next few days, despite no rain, will still be nasty but actually good conditions for some beach erosion with that NE wind, but my beach hunting days are over unless we get a good NEster that really takes out a few feet of sand, then I will be down there with the rest of half the detectorists in NJ. :) But, sure has been a long time since a good NEster has really hit our area.

So Bravo for you attempting the hunt today, maybe next time it will not be so brutal........

Don

You are definately a diehard detector!!! I don't do the rain.

I am just the clad queen thats all.. I am so annoyed with this dfx its not funny.

Rae maybe you should try a few new spots! Do you have any tot lots...great for practicing with dfx..... Also will show you the variety of signals you can pick up. The dig everything rule applies in tot lots. Or hit a local park, you could try the just dig signals above 70 method...you will miss alot but most of your signals should be good.... School yards, churches (with permission), walkways, parking lots with grass...

You're one heck of a hardy person! There's no way that I would put myself through that unless I was in a treasure beach such as Sebastian Bay after or during a hurricane. I did do Santa Monica beach during El Nino but I came home with lots of gold although I did get swamped once by a wave that went over my head 'cause I didn't jump fast enough onto a ledge, my long-leg pants kept me from completing the jump and the wave hit me. Fortunately, like you, I had seriously wrapped my detector in a heavy-duty plastic bag.

Another time I was in New Jersey considering entering a competition and it wasn't a warm day. On top of that the hunting area was dunes and the wind was howling like mad. The flag markers were bending! I would step outside and contemplate if I should sign up or not. I did this two or three times and my wife reassured me that it was no shame not to put myself through a sandstorm removing the top layer of skin from my face. So she was grateful when I said, "Let's go home."

Gregg, been to tot lots.. been digging over 70 even dug signals under 70 get this one... one place nickels came up in the low 30's to 40 and said nail... other places like on the beach today dug a quarter..it came up super low vid number... so I dig everything.. and am just about ready to say bag this dfx I just cant get it... I guess I am having a mini pity me party which I HATE... but I am seriously starting to really hate the dfx...and folks please dont pm me saying you will gladly take it off my hands cause I will just get more upset.. alls I wanna find is a someone in person to help me once or twice... I just feel like a dam retard is all....

I read the postings, folks with aces finding gold.... I cant find jack chit...but reg. clad... I am really upset tonite about this g.d. machine ... tonite I HATE IT. ok pity party is over.

Keep pluggin' away BB. More goodies will come to those of us who are persistant.

Hi Booty...

While I use an ExpII, your DFX is most capable of finding more than clad at the beach. First of all, at this time of year, gold is far and few between. You are at the mercy of the surf gods who move the sand and re-distribute the goodies. However, you need to be methodical in your hunting. Look for the cuts. Grid! Overlap your swings. Go SLOW. Look at the color of the sand. Any green clad? All are signs of places to hunt that will increase the odds of you finding "Au". What you said is true.... you have to have your coil over something to find something. What you need to do is find the places where there is a greater opportunity of more targets.

This afternoon, I slowly and carefully gridded out an area of beach during the negative tide (that's produced for me before). I began to hit a lot of targets, mostly clad. However, some of them were quite deep and I was finding a lot of "greenies" These are coins that have been buried for quite a while; though not necessarily "old". I worked that "line" of targets. It was here that I found a bit of junk stuff, about 8 or 9 deep nickels and then, the gold / diamond earring. If I'm not finding anything (be it in on the beach or diggin' dirt), I need to slow down :)

Joe I did exactly that.. the cut line... even found green coins..all reg. clad.. and I hunt slow anyways..am lucky if I get a two block area done in a few hours..sigh..and I dug every signal. I am starting to wonder if somethings wrong with my dfx.. I may send it into whites for a check up.. as its still under warranty... but am seriously thinking of getting another tector and like a village idiot.. I sold my m6 and am regretting that one..but, that didnt work on the beach well at all, worked great everywhere else but never found gold with it...I just keep swinging along...one of these years I will find something...

Booty what you are describing is what we considered a vacation up in WA state! My daughter & I would go to a little resort on the coast usually in Feb or March so we would get the storms & the wind. the cabin was up on a cliff surrounded by wind swept, let me repeat that WINDSWEPT trees. We would bundle up so only our eyes were exposed & go down to the beach & explore. we didn't have an MD back then, but we sure found some treasures in the form of driftwood & sea glass. & most importantly, family time. Afterwards we would curl up by a blazing fire & drink hot cocoa & read, or play board games. she was not a teen yet then, & she is now 32, but those are memories we cherish. Just had to let you know. your post made me laugh when I thought about those ferocious winds & how we were crazy enuf to love it!

Rae your readings make no sense at all...See if you have a local Whites dealer who can check your detector out....
