There's no "I" in team, but there is one on the button "I" dug! (CS Button)

I've been digging with the gang a lot this week. I'm on vacation. Some folks go away on some exciting journey in their minivan, but I can stay at home and witness the birth of a state, Civil War veterans returning home with souvenirs in their saddle bags, and several other touching events that occurred in my area. Who needs a trip to sunny Florida when you've got a "Search Coil Time Machine"?
Here are some of the more interesting finds:

The find of the week, and perhaps the year has got to be this beautiful cast brass Confederate block "I" button:

OMG!! :hello2: I couldn't believe it. I've always wanted to travel down south and try to dig a Confederate button. Who would have guessed I'd find one less than 5 miles from my house (IN INDIANA!)
I can't help but think about how that button got up here. It was most likely a souvenir of a Union Soldier. There was 1 Union Cavalry cuff button dug at the same site. I'd like to think he swapped a little coffee with a Johnny Reb for it, but more than likely the Johnny he got it from no longer needed it.
I dug a gun piece (I think) that appears to be from an early musket. ?? and a tool from the earliest site we hit (late 1700's to about 1850). I have an idea of what it was for, but I'll wait til I hear what you folks think it is. I'm going to post them on the "What is it" forum in the A.M.

Thanks for looking. I hope this post makes sense. It's way past my bed time, and I'm typing this in my sleep.

Great find, I think the large iron piece is an early hoe for farming and gardening back in the day.

I believe it's used to square off hand hewn beams. You stand above the beam and swing it downwards between your legs. My barn was built that way in the late 1700s. .

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking d2 and NHBandit are on the right track. I thought it might be used to notch out logs, or used to tap in wooden pegs and then cut them off flush with the log.

Thanks, :hello:

That is a really nice I button. Just goes to show you never know what is going to come out of the ground. In case you didn't know it the oval piece on the right is the bottom of a sturrip.

I'm from a different part of southern IN. :laughing7: (closer to Louisville, KY) I used to drive through your part of southern IN on my way to Vincennes. That would be a good area to research and hunt.

Yes it is! It even made Buckleboys day. He was calling friends in VA to tell them about it.

We're getting off to a good start. I finished strong last year with a 1/2 cent. Not a rare find in the east, but not very many made it this far west. Maybe I can dig a 1/4 stater this year. :laughing9:

Don't forget Morgan's raid, They traveled through quite a bit of southern Indiana and more than likely lost some goodies for you to find along the way.

I pounded the heck out of a site that I'm sure the raiders rode across, and never found a sign. I did find a 1/2 cent in the process, so it was worth the effort. I'd love to dig a "C" button, or a Kentucky CS button.

Thanks for the info!

I think you did walk over it. :laughing9: If you'll still speak to me after that comment, you can come along Saturday. Get out your hiking boots. We're going to hit "that spot". I'm spending the day there, and if I can make it back up the hill, I'm going to find the rest of Johnny's buttons (That is if Billy brought any more home with him).
