This just can't be...

As I am stumbling in the forum so many questions/issues/problems with the concept....

As far as I can tell from your information here, Bank Roll hunting consists of little more than:

Walking into a bank and asking for coins.

Taking the “good” ones and maybe selling them.

Getting rid of the “bad” ones.

Now, no one I have spoken to has ever said that they would have the nerve to even try this concept. And of course the “good” ones, they can't be worth more the face value of the coin anyway.

Now the concept seems to be con, likely put out by the coin processing people to drum up business, but furthered by those claiming coins have other “value”. If this “value” was the case and anyone could walk into banks and ask for them, everyone would be doing it, and since clearly everyone isn't doing it, and just as clearly no one is doing it, it can't be done. Would like to know from those that claim this exists or that they do it, what you would say to one who presents with a factual basis a: This just can't be, argument.

Thanks for exposing the truth. I see what this all is now. Now I understand why my uncle got me into coin collecting and hunting 40 years ago. IT'S A CONSPIRACY!

This isn't good at all. I got bamboozled into thinking all my keepers were worth more than face value! Obviously I'll have to dump them all and quit this stupid coin collecting hobby.

Anyone getting into this hobby to get rich is in the wrong hobby at least I'm not getting rich. But, I only have the face value invested in a coin, plus the gas to get to the various banks and credit unions I stop at. I only look for silver, not anything else. I buy from one bank or CU and only drop off the unwanted coins at a totally different named bank, so I don't have a chance of getting the same coins back. I have gone through thousands of dollars worth of coins and not found a single good saved coin. Then by accident, a box will give me 20-30 keepers, ya just never know. Sounds like to me this is something you should pass by and not get involved with. You won't have any fun and it will be too hard for you to enjoy. Skeptics are always disappointed.

Thanks so much . Now after 30 yrs of going into banks and asking for change I have been an idiot for all these 30 yrs . What am I do do with over 30 yrs of worthless wheat pennys silver coins and book after book of sets of coins. ROALMAO. Please your right . There is no Santa Clause .

If the concept of coin roll hunting is really too hard for you to figure out then don't do it. But it is just as simple as buying from a bank, and dumping the coins you don't want at another bank.

ok how about this: there would be absolutely no such hobby as coin collecting if rare coins and such could not be found in circulation. its literally impossible to collect coins unless you get them from circ. so someone has to find them. also, not everyone gives a damn about coins. my sister knows i collect coins, yet she will tell me that she doesnt care AT ALL about silver, wheats, rare or valuable coins, and she spends them on a regular basis since she works retail. i always save my pennies, and put them thru the bank counter with my halves, but my sister insists she doesnt care, and she literally throws pennies in the garbage (literally). shes a very stubborn b**** person. so, nothing you say will convince her to save said coins due to numismatic value. so, that right there is a great example of how old coins end up in circ...so obviously its possible...Keep it up and hh! I see, and that it just can't be.., I've fired up(literally flaming) the message board with more responses that any other post since yesterday. More thoughtful responses coming later, but a few quick one liners here to get us started.

The longer posts will take sometime to think through and resolve any information presented, but there will be time to do so. In the meantime, who's truth, who's facts, who has the detail needed for the presentation of the argument?

Maybe you would more wisely use your time on a snipe hunting forum ,where you can try to figure out if people spend hours on forums discussing imaginary bird hunting, is also untrue.

The writing style sure does seem familiar. A past poster also misused the apostrophe frequently (who's as used here should be whose--shows possession, as opposed to who is), but hasn't been around for a while.

No way to know for sure though.

This is a heck of a hobby though, so if you have time, try it. Collect pennies and nickels to start, they are cheap and there are so many different types to collect. And for the most part, collecting coins this way is the cheapest way to do it and you really can't lose money. The ones you save will never lose the value you put into them. You could get shorted rolls or foreign coins (but those are cool too) but most of the time it evens out, especially after you get a hand full of dimes in a box of pennies.

No claim of get rich quick(or slowly), hobbies have value to, kite flying/fighting has it's merits. Since your the first poster of more and a sentence to two, I'll spend a moment on the reply. No worries on the scams here, no ones offer to sell me any unsearched rolls of halves that may, or may not, have any silver in them. But I know I can get some on eBay easy enough. Had a penny collection when I was pre-10, not into any longer. And for scamming the banks, well banks have been such clean citizens over the last 20 some years, I wouldn't worry to much if something did some harm to them. Can't see being on their side in any way, and might as well advance the big banks are evil argument.
